About the contest: Springfield, Vermont was one of fourteen "Springfields" around the nation that competed to win the film's Hometown Premiere. All, of course, share their name with the hometown of the world's first family of comedy – The Simpsons. USA TODAY, The Nation's Newspaper, invited its readers to vote for their favorite Springfield Hometown Movie through a website and voting page on USATODAY.com. The contest was an enormous success with 109,582 votes cast online, and Springfield, Vt., won the competition with 15,367 votes. Springfield, Ill., came a close second with 14,634 and Springfield, Ore., was third place with 13,894 votes. Full results for all participating "Springfields" can be seen at www.thesimpsons.usatoday.com.

About the movie: It takes a wide screen to fully capture Homer Simpson's stupidity, and THE SIMPSONS MOVIE does it. In the eagerly-awaited animated feature film based on the hit TV series, Homer must save the world from a catastrophe he himself created. Starring in the film are Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, and Albert Brooks. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE opens nationwide on July 27.

Technically speaking, the Springfield on the Simpsons isn't in Vermont. Nobody really knows where it is. It has a desert, a swamp, a badlands and yet it's coastal and is susceptible to hurricanes and in a clip from the movie, it is mentioned that it lies on the borders of Ohio, Kentucky, Maine and Nevada.

According to the Simpsons epispode, Behind the Laughter, it states that the Simpsons are from Northern Kentuky.

Springfield, KY is in central Kentucky - it sits next to Shelbyville (REALLY) and... wait for it... SIMPSONville. I love the heck out of Vermont (nice bands, mountains, skiing, and beers), but we all know where the real Springfield is

okay everybody despite the voting the evidence points to springfield oregon. matt groening went to school at the university of oregon that neighbors springfield. there is a statue of jebediah smith that distinctly mirrors the statue(jebediah springfield) whose head is removed by bart. place names taken from eugene and portland include Flanders Ave, Terwilliger Blvd, Lovejoy, and Skinner's Butte. The tavern Max's is remarkably similar to Moe's. the nuclear plant is an allusion to the giant polluting weyerhauser that sits on the willamette river.

its not kentucky, its not anywhere cuz in a later episode they state that West Springfield is 3 times the size of Texas hereby voiding any possibility of a real geographical existence of said town,

Sprinfield's location on the Simpsons is intentionally kept ambiguous, which makes space for continuous great jokes on the subject. The Simpsons emcompass all aspects of American society, that such a common city name like Springfield is perfect for the show.

hellyeah is correct that the inspiration for the Simpson's Springfield came from the Springfield/Eugene,OR area.

The premiere should be a blast. Real cool that Page is playing.

You might want to try an open faced club. Maybe a sand wedge.

There was one opening bit... where they're all sitting on the couch, and the camera goes up through the ceiling and out into space. The galaxies become atoms as the camera continues pulling back, away from the molecules of homers brain and back into the living room where the bit started. I watched that several times, and as the camera pulls away from earth, it looks like Springfield is located southwest of Lake Michigan. Hit rewind next time you see that opening segment.

oompapa,if you watch that clip,it's obviously a goof,as right after,Marge states that Homer writes the sunday comic strip, which is just another joke meant to keep us guessing.
still the best show on TV.

sahagian - you mean it is in Southwest Michigan? Because there is a Springfield, MI in Southwest Michigan, I live like 20 miles from it. It was third to last on the contest to host the premier.

even though Va won the vote it cant be there or Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio or any springfield east of the mississippi because the local radio stations call letters are KBBL. if it has a K its west of the Miss, W is east of the miss

I am one of 200 volunteers who appeared in the winning Springfield Vermont video. After we helped our local Chamber of Commerce win the contest, they turned their backs on us. We should have been the first in town to be invited to view the world premiere of The Simpsons Movie but instead we were excluded so the elite members of the community could be issued special invitations. And then not even a word of thanks or mention of us in the public ceremony outside the theater. Read more and view our famous winning video now at our new website:
