Phix's Phinal Shows

Nationally acclaimed and Boulder, CO-based Phish tribute band, Phix, will be performing their final weekend of shows August 3, 4 and 5 in their home state of Colorado. On Friday, August 3 the band will perform its last Colorado Front Range show at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver and on Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5, they will play their final shows anywhere at State Bridge Lodge in Bond, CO.

Phix started back in the late summer of 2001 while the immensely popular band Phish was on an indefinite hiatus from performing. After an overwhelming initial response, Phix hit the road and soon had criss-crossed the country several times over, gaining new fans at every stop. Phish returned at the end of 2002 and then retired permanently in August of 2004 after performing their final weekend of shows in their home state of Vermont – a mud-soaked event they called "Coventry." Through consistent national touring Phix kept gaining momentum even after Phish came back from their hiatus, and even more so after they broke up for good in '04. Now, after almost 500 shows in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and taking the band "as far as it could go," they are pleased to celebrate the music one more time at the aptly named "Covertry."

State Bridge is a special place that many Coloradans hold dear to their heart. Located between Vail and Steamboat Springs, on the banks of the Colorado River, State Bridge Lodge is an outdoor paradise that sadly fell victim to arson on June 2 of this year. The 100+ year-old lodge, restaurant, office and stage were all destroyed and the summer calendar of events quickly got whittled down to a couple of major events, including Covertry. The shows will be held at the site of the old lodge with all necessary equipment being brought in. Luckily, the historic cabins and newer yurts were not damaged and of course there is plenty of free camping within walking distance of the site. The future of State Bridge is still in limbo, and this could be the last summer to enjoy what it has to offer, so everyone who knows the magic of State Bridge Lodge is encouraged to come out and show their support for this special place at what could be one of the last events held there.

In addition to hearing three sets from Phix each day at Covertry, fellow Colorado band Shakedown Street (Grateful Dead tribute) will be performing two sets on Sunday (between the Phix sets) and there will be another special guest performing on Saturday as well. Other activities that can be enjoyed at State Bridge include rafting, swimming, fishing and a myriad of other outdoor pastimes. There will be food and drink vendors available all weekend as well.

Fans will be pleasantly surprised by how versatile Phix has become in working with Phish's repertoire over the years. Often incorporating songs that Phish had long put to rest, Phix's setlists read like a who's-who in celebrated Phish songs. By adding their own personalities to the composed material, Phix maintains an inherent mischievousness in each show by never playing any song the same way twice. To increase the authenticity of the live experience, Phix always traveled with an "intelligent" lighting rig and designer to add a fascinating visual element to their shows – a touch that was very much appreciated by fans.

Not only has the band raised eyebrows with Phish's fans, they've also inspired curiosity with Phish's members. At least two members of Phish have come to see Phix when they've been out on the road performing. Mike Gordon (twice) and Page McConnell, Phish's bassist and keyboardist, respectively, have both come to check out Phix and have expressed their approval. Phix has also held several benefits for the Mockingbird Foundation, a charitable organization that was founded, and is run by, devoted Phish fans.

I think it's great that they're going out at such a wonderful venue. Phix was a great band that did just that, gave me my phix.

moephishH2O: You have Dark Star Orchestra in your "Favorite Bands" list, would you be upset if there was a cover story about DSO's last show? Really makes you think...

These guys have been touring the country for five years, and I think something that significant coming to an end deserves the front page. Thanks for the good times, Phix.

Had moephishH2O ever gone to a PHIX show he would soon realize these guys are not only super friendly down to earth gentleman, but incredibly talented musicians. They should be commended for their hard work and dedication they put into their shows. It's not easy to have a family, co-ordinate tours that works with everyone's schedule, and still try to maintain a normal life. I wish these guys the best and can not wait to hear what they will come up with next. This will not be the last we hear of these exceptional characters. Great Job!

These guys were one hell of a Phish cover band... A couple of the shows I've been to were better than Coventry.

why do you people gotta rag on them. Anecdote.... I was seeing these guy somewhere and they were ripping... I leaned to the guy next to me and said what do you think and he started analyzing why this wasnt good etc... I said "Oh yea man that other phish cover band that tours nationally is much better" to which he replied who are they and I said exactly. So give these guys a break ok...

You know, the more I think about it, I guess I was kinda harsh. Floyd, you make a good point. I am a DSO fan and would want a story if they were breaking up. I have seen Phix a couple of times and they do put on a great show. Sorry for pissin' everyone off :-)

This sounds like a great event, great venue.

The one time I stumbled on a Phix show, I left with that good warm feeling ... a huge smile ... and have since been thankful for the atmosphere they did their best to re-create. Good luck and thank you!

Best cover band ever, Dark Star is great, but they couldn't touch how difficult and technical phish songs are. And it is definately worth reporting .

I know this won't fly with the phix phans, but comparing DSO to Phix is like comparing Star Wars to Spaceballs...Paying tribute to a band whose music has spanned more than 40 years and inspired an entire scene of music is a little different than paying tribute to a band who had 10 good years of touring and now doesn't even play live anymore...

And yes, I followed Phish from 1993 to 2000, 60+shows, (until the crowd turned into a DMB scene and people were just there for the drugs and to throw glow sticks...)

Anyhow, I saw Phix...they are good...they do deserve a little media for the last show, but I wouldn't compare them to DSO...just my opinion...please be kind...

I know at least 3 people at HSMF that didn't enjoy these guys during late night. Their Vaudville show was pretty good. I was VERY excited about them opening for Garaj Mahal. Bottom line. They didn't ever have any of the super necessary quick pauses between phrases that makes the music of Phish so intricate. Sure, they blew threw phrases with lightning speed (in fact EVERYTHING was too fast). They all seemed to be too f*$%ed up, and there was no fluid motion to the music at all. We were all very disappointed.

I was at High Sierra too, and everyone I talked to loved the Phix sets - but, then again, phish phans have got to be some of the most critical people I have ever met. (I would love to see any one of them jump up in front of a crowd and muddle through FOAM.) I think the Phix boys are great, and it takes HUGE balls to go up there in front of a super cynical audience - luckily, the people that do go are there for the right reason, and a Phix show is incredibly fun and high energy.

Too fast?
Um. Ok.

I can't wait for Covertry.
Phish and Dead music? Free camping? 6 sets of live phish music? It might be the last time I ever hear those songs live again... It might be the last time I look over and see everyone leap up in the air at the same time, screaming "I SAW YOU...WITH A TICKET STUB IN YOUR HAND!!!!"

Come on. The shit is FUN.
Anyone who can't see that is just plain old grumpy.

I personally do not care who covers who. If its good and u like it, thats all that matters. I got to see PHIX one time, and I enjoyed it, every person there did. I do not compare them to any band, not even the one they cover, because, like DSO, there is much of their "OWN" personal takes on the tunes. you know, sit in the grass if it feels good. enjoy what you have now, it may be gone tomorrow.
all things are impermanent, nothing last phorever.
as long as I am alive I will LOVE MUSIC. cover a band, cover a single song, we all LOVE what is phamiliar to us!!!
