Love Panic, but a "greatest hits" type album? WTF? Should have been live selections...maybe, but...

If they want to put it out, I say put it out. Now if the record company wants to put it out, that's a different story.

You know what, I think I'll just ask them tonight when I see them. Or maybe tomorrow. Or maybe Saturday!

Panic's back in LA this weekend and all the freaks are freaking!!!

garbage, i am with sunnbear, if they had to release this album then they should have picked some of their favortie live selections for each song, maybe some cuts from the earlier years

If you want a live recording go to livewidespreadpanic.com there is an infinite supply of live wsp. Everyone on here gives grief to bands whos ultimate goal is to make money. Isnt that what we are all kinda working for? Unless you dont have a job and follow shows all the time.

pretty ridiculous to me, and i've always been a big panic fan. they don't need to release something like this, probably got a little extra cash for it. stupid comment rickymullet, its not unoriginal at all. nobody out there has ever sounded anything like panic, and if you are bored at their shows then you don't enjoy live music. i've never heard anyone compare them to the dead, not even close to the same kind of sound.

Panic has put out several live albums. And several live DVDs. Most of us on here have the studio originals. This compilation is a restrospective deal. Nothing wrong with that. How many folks here were listening to Panic back in 88? Not many. I agree with Bnaylor. Their catalog is so extensive that it may be daunting to a person that is interested. I like the idea. Let Panic be Panic. Go hippie away otherwise. They've only allowed, I dunnow, several hundred free taped shows over the past 20 years. Get over yourselves. You don't want it? Don't buy it. Eat a biscuit and all will be better.

This really isn't Panic's idea. I have no proof-just instinct, but keep in mind they are not with Capricorn any more. They probrably went along so that Capricorn would not release this right when their freshly recorded material comes out. Supposedly the boys were not happy about Capricorn re-releasing the Panic in the Streets/Ga Theatre DVD at the same time as Live at the Backyard. Still, it's more artwork and whatnot for the collection so I'm buying.

This would be a decent starter for a new fan...nothing more. Consider the contract with Capricorn complete and leave it on the shelves. B-sides and alternate takes would be more appealing than this.

But they should have cut TTMT to one song and given three to Everyday, a much bigger album in my mind of Panic history. That lead in to Pleas is where my Panic dreams began. I mean come on people!

Of course I wish this was a live album, but please let panic do what the heck they want. Afterall it is their music there is no reason for you to sit there and complain because you don't want them to release this album. Just don't buy it and quit your bitching. I know I will be buying it!

Look, goodpeople, this greatest hits album is not targeted at anyone who has ever been on jambase, let alone someone who has attended multiple shows and owns multiple albums. It is directed at newbies, to make it easier for folks curious about WP to buy one album and see if they like it. If they do, they'll be back for more. Any band with as many studio albums as Panic has SHOULD have a greatest hits album. It will continue to sell well for decades. Haven't you ever bought a greatest hits album as your first one by a band you don't know that much about? I wish I was still in LA so I could go to those shows this weekend!

we need some more comments like letshavesomefun

not that i agree with him, i dont. i dig panic.

but comeon...that shit made me laugh. i kill time at work reading this shit, and anything that makes me smile is good enough for me.

and the album, IMO - who cares? like i understand people perferring a live selection of greatest hits, cause this is jambase, of course with a band like panic we'd perfer live...but there arnt actually any negative consequences that this album can have. plus, i wouldnt doubt that feedback like this will reach the panic boys and we can expect a live greatest hits sometime in the future.
meanwhile...i'll enjoy the flecktones at carnegie hall this weekend. if anyone's in nyc tonight check out kenny's castaways - codename is playing there and they play some ill jazz-infused funk rock. peace all

I really hate to see this from Panic. Lookup Legacy Records, people, then read and learn. The are finding the time to make moe money...moe money...moe money. Damn, I understand it, but it stings when the music gets whored this way!

here's the thing, WSP probably didn't want to realease a "Greatest Hits" album but it may have been required in their contract. thats what happened to DMB aka "The Best of Whats Around"

There's been alot of talk about Widespread's decision to making this a studio greatest hits. All bands, no matter how good live they are, still record in a studio. Even the holy grail of jambands did so. I may be a bit old school but I always look forward to getting a new widespread studio album. To assume that anyone knows why this band decided to put this album out is presumptuous. Keep in mind they have not only thre own families to think of. Everyone is about making the money. I think we all need to take a step back and realize that if we were in the situation as some of these artists we would do the same. I would looooovveeee to get paid 20/30/40/60 thousand bucks for four hours of work. Make sure you think about the reality of this music business before posting any judgements on these great musicians or any other.
Well done boys, thanks for putting this out, of what I hope to be many, greatest hits albums. Maybe you can begin a "Dick's Picks" of your own.
OOOOOOOOOOooooo, maybe a box set. That'll get 'em going.
Peace. "Hope to see you there"

Hey Morons, We live in a free market society. Panic has the right to do whatever the hell they want. Personally, I have all of these tracks on my computer so I won't be buying it. I don't think they put this out for the DIE HARD fans. That's what livepanic.com is for. This is a disk that a newbie can pick up at Best Buy and fall in love with the band. Let it be.

The Dead put out Skeletons in the Closet, not for diehard fans, but in efforts to appeal to a wider audience. Why the hell not? Any fan has tons of live show. This might bring kids to discover a great band. Fall will be ill. Herring has been fucking ripping. Peace

As musicians trying to market themselves, this album was an excellent idea - since I have multiple live versions of all these songs, I probably won't choose to buy it, but there are still a lot of live-music fans out there who have been orphaned by the demise of the dead, the break-up of Phish, and the pending conclusion of SCI's tenure - so it is the perfect time to try to broaden their appeal. WSP was on FIRE the last time I saw them (Bonnaroo) - I have never seen a show like that without any set breaks... there was a point where I was tiring of the Panic schtick, but since Herring has come on board they've been getting better and better, and now I won't hesitate to call myself a SpreadHead.

For someone just opening their eyes to Panic this record is the perfect thing. The most far out live jam or intense show is lost on new ears. Sure most of us have heard these cuts before but for someone who doesn't want all Panic's albums(yet)this idea is brilliant. More Power!
