TREY ANASTASIO TO RELEASE INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM
THE HORSESHOE CURVE ON JULY 24

Trey Anastasio
On July 24, composer, bandleader and guitarist TREY ANASTASIO will release his new album THE HORSESHOE CURVE via his own Rubber Jungle Records. Instrumental from start to finish, THE HORSESHOE CURVE showcases Anastasio's Afro-Cuban-influenced compositions, replete with five-part horn arrangements, tight breaks, multiple percussionists, and of course, Anastasio's soulful, nimble guitar work. THE HORSESHOE CURVE is a journey, an inventive exploration of the big band funk that Anastasio has been steeped in for the larger part of the decade. See below for a tracklist.

THE HORSESHOE CURVE was recorded with producer Bryce Goggin at The Barn, Anastasio's studio complex in Vermont, as well as Trout Recording in Brooklyn, New York. Alongside Anastasio, the band includes sax players Dave Grippo, Peter Apfelbaum and Russell Remington; trumpeter Jen Hartswick, trombonist Andy Moroz, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, drummer Russ Lawton, percussionist Cyro Baptista and bassist Tony Markellis.

Two tracks, "The 5th Round" and "The Horseshoe Curve," were recorded live, the latter at a 2002 show at the Amphitheatre at Station Square in Pittsburgh. "We were playing outside next to some train tracks that ran past the stage," recalls Anastasio. "Right at the peak moment of the show, a really long train rumbled by blowing its horn. You can hear it on the record. It sounded incredible, the band started playing to the rhythm of the train and hence, the name of the album."

Studio tracks like "Sidewalks of San Francisco" and "Burlap Sack and Pumps" sizzle with improvisational horns and tropical-funk rhythms that wouldn't be out of place on Afro-beat pioneer Fela Kuti's classics Zombie or Gentlemen. "I listen to a lot of Fela," says Anastasio. "Often when I'm cooking or milling around the house. Maybe a little King Sunny Ade as well, but it's usually Fela."

A prolific writer, Anastasio often has several musical projects going at the same time, laboriously tending to each one. But THE HORSESHOE CURVE was a different animal. "I rediscovered it a few months ago and it sounded really fresh and exciting to me," Anastasio says. "So I went back into the studio and finished it up. I had done another instrumental record [2004's Seis De Mayo] and this was a logical progression. It's a layered record filled with textural colors, similar in structure to Seis De Mayo and my first solo record, but with different instrumentation. And the musicians were such great improvisers, it really came together."

Anastasio's solo career is filled with unique musical curves, a very conscious decision to keep experimenting and challenging himself and his audience. "This new record feels very natural, it's part of the continuum," he says. "The style of my writing seems to vary from album to album, a little more pop, a little more orchestral, a little jazzier. But if you listen closely to the vocal layers in [Phish songs] 'Twist' or 'Bouncing Around The Room' you'll hear that they're not very far removed from the horn lines in 'Sidewalks of San Francisco' or 'Burlap Sack and Pumps.' I look forward to working on the next one!"

THE HORSESHOE CURVE track list:
1. Sidewalks of San Francisco
2. Olivia
3. Burlap Sack & Pumps
4. The 5th Round
5. The Horseshoe Curve
6. Noodle Rave

Yeah....Burlap Sacks and Pumps ! I always thought that was one of the best TAB tunes. This albumsounds like it could really be decent. Trey's jams are for the most part good...it's when he sits down and tries to write pop songs that it starts to go wrong. Oh and the lyrics he writes himself...not so hot. Again, this album is instrumental so no banal lyrics....woohoo !

i'd never sun on Trey for having personal problems that get thrust into public view....I think most of us would have the same type of issues had we'd been on the wild ride he has. I know I would have given all the shit Ive gotten myself into as is.

As long as people get through it, I think it builds charachter and in Trey's case likely will give him some more ammo for songwriting.

Remember....Smooth seas never made a skilled mariner.

I am excited Trey is releasing this album! Some great songs live, and now we'll get to hear what they can do in the studio!

I loved the early versions of Trey Band, but wasn't the biggest fan of the Clock, aka Tony Markellis. I think Tony Hall added more to the sound, played more inventive bass, and definitely didn't play the same lines over and over. But Fat Tony was awesome on Windora Bug!

Either way I hope Trey is doing well and getting, better, and I cannot wait to get this album! Thanks Trey!

The train jam at the June 11, 2002 show in Pittsburgh was pretty insane. It was in the middle of Last Tube at the end of the first set. Check out the show if you can find it, Trey was in the zone.

Trey may have caught the train, but Jerry made it rain across the river at Three Rivers Stadium in 1995... : )

Sorry for the dumbass comment. I was out of line. I just get upset when someone says something like "if Jerry would have just cleaned up his act" etc. Jerry was trying to do just that. Trey is actually a really cool, friendly guy. For as big as he is, he could choose to be an asshole, but he's always been extremely friendly to people from what I've seen at shows (and also afterwards signing autographs and taking pictures with fans). Trey's obviously got a tough battle to fight, so lets give the guy the support that he deserves.

With a line up like that it's hard to go wrong (although from what I've seen from Trey since post-hiatus- he's perfectly capable of masturbating over top of some of the finest of bands- take Mike w/ the duo- sick shows till he showed up). Hopefully it will be a return to his orginal solo band, which started quite well, then simmered, then turned sour & rancid. I hate to see a guy who obviously has (or had) so much talent piss it all away. What happened to songs like Reba & YEM? I might give him one more try (although I've been saying that for years)- but I think he's getting close to retirement. As much as I miss the old phish days, seeing an overzealous rock star cranking out a bunch of noise to support a lifestyle of drugs & leisure is pretty fucking lame & disappointing. I realize younger fans might not see it this way & I expect to get a lot of criticism- so bring it on. All I've really got to say is that there is a lot of really great music out there being produced by people who are keeping it real- don't let your vision get cloudy based on someone's supposed stature.

Commercially releasing five year old lyricless jams and expect fans to shill out cash due to an extra EP of 40% more recycled stuff? Most fans vote with their wallet and I for one ain't buying-I see this charting at number 178 with a bullet, then on to .99 cent dustbin, just like Shine and Bar 17. Rubber Jungle is doomed

funkzone, you make an excellent point that is perhaps lost on some newer fans; as a vet of both the Dead and Phish, good and bad, I realized at some point the importance of searching out and supporting those who were throwing down hard every night- whomever that might be for you. I was always dismayed that the Dead (and later, Phish) could produce a simply terrible show and still be lauded as if it was right on. No disrespect to Trey, 'cause I've seen him kill it, but make sure you also support the many musicians who are lighting it up every single night: there are many- one small example- Bill Frisell, who scorched the Higher Ground a few nights ago (with Mike G. respectfully looking on) Thanks for your time and don't forget your own music!

My thoughts on a Phish reunion:

Not trying to be negative, just realistic. Even if they get back together there's no way they will be back to pre or post-hiatus form (unless they rehearse for like six years). Be thankful for the years they gave us and move on. Looks like Trey is.

I thought the Horeshoe Curve was a reference to being unlucky and getting on the rebound. Maybe the horn sound was a foreshadow of 'toot' and Trey should beware. The album should be called "Boogah Soogah" or "What are Those Red and Blue Lights?"

Good for Trey. If this rules or if it sucks, it will be different from what he has done in the past.

I am sick of artist getting so comfy and lazy that they do not push themselves. Trey/Phish, Panic, Blues Traveler are all bands I got turned onto in the late 80’s/early 90's who have not really done anything a whole hell of a lot different from their first records. The Dead were getting stale too, but I was just getting into them so I kept up till '94. By the time '95 came around, it got tired.

Why??? I have heard both Trey and Jerry talk about the stress of their success and the organization that they need to support. If you like it or not, these bands turn into very large companies. I am in upper management and I identify with this stress because when you build a company, people depend on you. Not just the rodies or guys who design and distribute t-shirts, but their families too. That is the reality of any great artist and it becomes successful – they need to maintain that success because people rely on them. If they go too far into left field, the tour doesn’t sell, the album doesn’t sell and you can’t make payroll. Then you lay people off and that sucks. Because of this, I feel that these bands keep with their formula. That is why I dig Wilco. They have not been caught by this trap.

Rehab or not - Yea to Trey for stepping out on his skin!!!!

Daddy Fet/Kevin17 – You got a lot of Thumbs Down, but I think that’s funny. It is humor people!!! At least they are not taking pot shots at others calling them bitches and the such.

Funkzone – “What happened to songs like Reba & YEM?” You make a good point, but I think that you may miss the point too (hard to tell because I’m not in your head). Those were really good songs because they were so much different from anything that came before. Big jams, interesting lyrically and room for improv. The problem is that Phish tried to create new songs in their style and it all got too formulaic. They got stale, they got bored, they got high and the whole thing got dysfunctional. I am paraphrasing Trey there.

Fiveyrold – You are too correct. I am just starting to get into Fela Ransom Kuti. Expensive Shit and He Miss Road are AWSOME!!! Anything else you can recommend???

Who said something about a Phish reunion? God, I hope not. The material that they came back with after the hiatus was totally dreadful. They started to become a nostalgia act and I don’t think that any of us want that.

Like I said – good for Trey breaking away. Keep it up, keep it interesting and keep it clean!

Speaking of Wilco, Jeff Tweedy went to rehab and found that he can still be an amazing songwriter when he's clean. I hope Trey can do the same and maybe this album is a step in the right direction. Of course, while writing songs like "burlap sack and pumps", Trey was probably high.

Thinking that Mike G., J. Fishman, Page and Trey will never be able to play together again is just being a total dumbass. Phish I think blows a lot of bands out of the water. I even think Trey from the 90's or 2000's is still one of the best guitar player in the world PERIOD. It's been said and proven soo i really don't give a shit what any of you fuckers say. I would love to see phish get back together, and they would rock like it was 95 again, I will bet you anything. Trey just needs time to look for other shit, and to fix his guitar effect, I meant wtf is wrong w/ his distortion he used for the last tow years of Phish???

+2 Votes Thumbs down! Thumbs up!

Airball your last comment is one of the dumbest coments I have ever read on jam base and all of us who read jambase realize what that means. Why on earth do you think if phish reunited it would take 6 years to return to post or pre hiatus form? its not like they have forgotten their songs. If you knew anything about phish you would know that they quit practicing regularly after 1998. that means when they came back off of their hiatus they didnt practice with each other everyday for a year first, they just came back. if you are a good musician and you have played with a group of guys for 20 years you will always be able to play with them.
Phish will come back, and if they have that fire and start practicin again they will be back to form in 6 weeks. All you haters who say trey sucks are still pissed that he broke apart phish. I have seen him lots since the end of phish and everytime trey killed it. Don't believe me? check out the late night vegoose 2006, or san francisco 12/2/05 or 12/3/05 or hammerstein ballroom new york 5/13/05. All those shows are sick, some of my favorite shows by any band. Hey tate79, I am certainly capable of typing stupid stuff, but I don't think it was that bad. I do know that Phish didn't practice after the hiatus. That's why some of those post-hiatus shows, while still worth seeing, left a little something to be desired. I was obviously exaggerating, but I think my point is still valid. They'll need to work a little harder next time - bring their "A" game. I'm not slamming them or being negative, I've seen my fair share of shows and love Phish as much as the next guy. But I also think that it's okay to be critical of our favorite bands. I respect their music and if they're gonna do it, they should do it right.

Femi Kuti is awesome live! Very diverse, entertaining music and visual performance. I'll be checking him out at the Fillmore(SF) on 7/21. Long live afro-rock!

Ownwership has it's priveleges, and the way some of you obsess about Trey. he obviously owns you.

I wish him ALL GOOD THINGS!!!!!

ANYONE WHO SAW THE 01-02 Tour is stoked about this album. As far as the "solo" in quotes. Non one does anything trult great without help from like minded individuals.

Those gutsy enough to fight the good fight in the arena of life have no business answering to the herd watching amused on the sidelines.

Man up or Man out.

Trey will always be the man. I can see from the comments he is still very much in all of your heads.
