The Village Voice Announces Initial Band Lineup
For the 7th Annual Village Voice SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL™
July 21 at Coney Island

The Village Voice, the nation's largest alternative weekly newspaper, is excited to announce the initial lineup for the 7th Annual SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL™ taking place Saturday, July 21, 12-9 p.m., at Coney Island.

The Village Voice Siren Festival™ is a free all-day music event open to all ages, featuring live international, national and local bands, as well as DJs performing on two outdoor stages at historic Coney Island. Now in its seventh year, The Village Voice SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL™ has solidified its status as one of the top leading outdoor music festival by drawing over 100,000 music fans in each of its last four years.

Scheduled performers include NEW YORK DOLLS; WE ARE SCIENTISTS; MATT & KIM; THE BLACK LIPS; DR. DOG; NOISETTES; LAVENDER DIAMOND; THE DETROIT COBRAS; ELVIS PERKINS; THE TWILIGHT SAD and many others still to be announced!

The showcase of both indie rock veterans as well as emerging artists has led The New York Times to call Siren Fest "an instant hit," and "a crucial barometer for up-to-the-minute alternative rock." The New York Sun notes the festival "scoops up the top layers of underground music and flips them over for the New York public to examine." And according to The New York Post, Siren Fest's impressive lineup makes it "the not-to-be-missed show of the summer."

that's because these are all indie bands. Make sure to borrow your sister's jeans if you go to this show!

Hey Roberto,

String Cheese Incident and Umphrey McGee's labels are independantly owned. Does that make them indie too. Borrowing your sisters jeans? What does that mean?

As for some insight welfpack.

NEW YORK DOLLS - legendary punk band from the early 70's.
MATT AND KIM - keyboard and drum melodic stuff.
BLACK LIPS - scuzzy drunken good time garage rock.
NOISETTES - raw punk soul with this chick from NIgeria on vocals with a great set of pipes.
TWILIGHT SAD - Scottish folk psych rock.

Elvis Perkins is very cool. He and his crew opened for MMJ here in Portland and were really good.

by da beach boyeeeee.....this is probably the last year of the siren fest because they are about to corporatize coney island...last year on july 21st (i remember because it's my gf's b-day) i went to see umphrey's/galactic in central park and then phix at nite....good times. last year i had to leave the siren fest early to go to see les claypool and en route i bought a mets bic lighter that i said last season would last until they won the world series. they narrowly missed last year and unbelievably enough i still have the lucky mets bic lighter in my possession....good stuff!

New York Dolls started punk in the U.S. They influenced many including The Ramones. Also, unfortunately, all the 80's hair bands.

Come to think of it...they started punk rock everywhere. They were even managed by Malcolm McLaren, who later became The Sex Pistols manager. A direct line.

They're going to add more bands plus another headliner, the other being NY Dolls. I mean its free and coney island is nyc's own venice beach.

the detroit cobras are worth checking out. they are a hard-rocking, all female outfit from the D who mainly play revved up versions of atypical moldy oldies. think, me first and the gimmie gimmies meets hells belles. they're not going to break any new ground, but they'll go just fine with a glass of wild turkey and a pbr chaser.

Gmoo...Were you born without a sense of humor? Obviously you can't take a joke. I guess you are one of those kids that wears his sister's pants. Because I definitely seem to have hit a nerve. And thanks for that diagnosis on my level of insecurity. I'll give Tony Robbins a call and enroll in one of his self help workshops ASAP.

Crusty Dumpling - I was utilizing the word "indie" as a genre, not as an indicator of being signed to a major record label. "Indie" is the present day equivalent to what the word "alternative" meant in the 1990s. If you don't know what I mean about the sister's pants reference, then you need to hit up your nearest scenester bar/hangout. Wearing tight girls' jeans is the new rage apparently. If you make it out to San Diego, there's a joint called the Casbah that will illuminate my point. I saw a recent movie about the New York Dolls. The guitarist is a wreck. Hope he doesn't collapse on stage. He's been working as a library assistant for like the last 15 years.

roberto- although I really don't condone trying to put down bands or people on this site, I understood your comment and thought it was hilarious. Sisters jeans.....hahahaha.
