The Best Of David Bowie 1980-1987: Sight & Sound

On June 5, Virgin/EMI Music Catalog Marketing will release The Best Of David Bowie 1980-1987: Sight & Sound. Among the 36-track CD/DVD collection's 19 audio gems are many of Bowie's best 1980s hits, including "Let's Dance," "Modern Love," "China Girl" and "Blue Jean." Its 15 video clips include Bowie's top '80s music videos and, making their DVD release debut, videos for "The Drowned Girl" and "When The Wind Blows."

Virgin/EMI Music Catalog Marketing will also release David Bowie's classic 1974 album Young Americans in an expanded Special Edition CD/DVD package on June 5. Young Americans, representing the zenith of Bowie's influential soul period, contributed in no small measure to breaking white soul music into the mainstream. The album was, in theory, about "emotional drive," but came to represent much more than that, both upon its release and over time. Young Americans is Bowie's vision of and reply to a wide swath of above-board and underground musical and socio-political influences, including soul music, politics, sex, drugs, dancing, and the cultural scenes of downtown New York and uptown Philadelphia. In addition to the album's eight original tracks, including its #1 single "Fame" and rousing title track, the new edition's CD features three bonus tracks and the DVD includes new audio mixes of the CD's tracks by legendary producer Tony Visconti, as well as Dick Cavett Show performance and interview clips from 1974.

i like bowie, but i'm not that excited about this release for two reasons:
1. don't we already have plenty of "greatest hits"-esque releases from bowie.....i guess he's still a big enough cash-cow for the powers-that-be to justify one more.
2. correct me if i'm wrong, but 80's era bowie just doesn't do it for me. with all the great material he released in the 70's (ziggy, diamond dogs, aladdin sane, berlin trilogy, etc.), why do we need an 80's greatest hits disc......with or without some videos

Funny story about a Bowie show...

I'm sitting in the Dean Smith Dome, in Chapel Hill, at a Glass Spiders Tour show, in 1987 or 88. Frampton was the lead guitarist for the tour, and Bowie made a tongue-in-cheek show of cutting him off each time he'd go into a "Do You Feel" solo snippet.

Everything being played in the first set seemed to be only about two years old, and you could tell the crowd ACHED for some Ziggy stuff.

After teasing a bit of Diamond Dogs, and whipping the SEATED listeners into a bit of a frenzy, the band broke into China Doll, raising an audible mass groan. With perfect timing, a 20-year-old girl jumped up in front of me, clapped her hands together at the first sound of China Doll's lyrics, and actually said, "I'm SOOOO happy they're playing the old stuff."

Sadly, the 80's represent, to some, Bowie's best days. I'm certainly not one of those people, but they're out there and they have money.

I saw Bowie just a few years ago and he did lots of very old stuff, including Man Who Sold the World, Ziggy Stardust, Life On Mars? and Hang On To Yourself. He surprised me...not quite the same as when I saw him in '79, but who is? By the way...Polyphonic Spree opened. What a trippy choir. Very happy music.

I like David Bowie, and I do agree that his stuff from the 70s is much better. Nonetheless, when I think of David Bowie, I think of Phish...apparently I'm not the only one(thanks frogbrigade22).

yeah gotta agree this is not wow factor stuff , i already have all these songs for sure. i am a huge bowie fan , especially of the ziggy stuff.
overall - that is a pretty funny story about a bowie show , mostly since he apparently did a cover of china doll!!! wow that must have been wild?!?

I'm not a fan of the 80's bowie either. I love The Man Who Sold The World and Ziggy Star Dust. His live from pilly release is really good too. Three starts only for 80's era Bowie

When I think of David Bowie only four things really come to mind...Phish, Ziggy Stardust, the big ass deal that was made about the China Doll video (have to be kind of old to remember that, kids), and of course Bowie's involvement in helping bring the legend SRV to the masses. For that last thing mentioned, my thanks to you Mr. Bowie.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't a 70s Bowie "best of" be a hell of a lot cooler. Some unreleased performances of his 70s material would be awesome. Have some bootlegs from that era that are fuckin nice. David Bowie....a-b-c#m....UB40!
