Deep Water Junction was the opener for the sold out show at Bogart's. They have a good sound, but a little mellow for my taste. It's was my 2nd time seeing them open for Hookah and I noticed they are starting to get a bit of a fanbase. Nice to see. Well on to Hookah. It was probably the 2nd best show I've seen them play this year, it's gonna be hard to top what they did at the Newport on February 10th, total mind fuck. Words can't even describe that one. Hookah started the 1st set with "Surround." Which was great cause I had just DL the song that week & had been wanting to hear it. Next came "Goodtime," which I've noticed that they have been playing allot. Which I hope they don't burn it out for me, but it is a great party song. Then they played a song I didn't know what it was called, it's an Ed tune called "Thief."
Then came the song they are going to blow my ears out on one of these day, "Slipjig Into The Poppy Fields." That is one song I could never get tired of. It was a thing of beauty. The song just keeps evolving. It really is a crowd favorite, I just couldn't believe they were playing it so early in the show. Then I knew the rest of the night was going to be a treat, and it was. Dave's cover of Bad Company's "Seagull" was next. The best "Ol' Montana Red Dog" I have ever heard next. I haven't heard them play it a long time and it just added to the pleasure of hearing it. "Springtime Again" followed, another favorite of mine. Hookah ended the 1st set with "So They Say" into "StreatBeater" (the theme from Sanford & Son) which was so funked out.
The 2nd set started out with "Lax," which is another tune I've been hearing allot lately. That reggae beat they slip in there totally makes the tune. Then it was time for Cliff to take the lead vocals, which I think every hookah fan loves to see. He sang "Brokedown Engine," which was so nice. Hookah then started going in & out of songs. Starting with "Chicago" > "Werewolves of London" (which was my 1st time hearing them do it, Vern Peltomaa sang lead along with playing acoustic guitar)> "Raging River" > "Chicago." It was sweet.
"Tea Rose" followed, which I only know by hearing it before. Then Cliff got back on lead and did Hot Dog, which you would never guess is a Led Zeppelin song if you heard it, even when Zeppelin played it. Next was "Ecstasy," I love this song, hookah just jammed it out. Perfect song before an encore. So what was it going to be tonight I was personally hoping for "Bone" (I love when they encore there own songs) but we got the cover of "When I Die," which was no disappointment for me. This old Blood, Sweat & Tears song is great. The first time I heard it I thought it was a hookah song. They just have a way of doing that.
So my 26th ekoostik hookah show, in a 2 year period, was once again a masterpiece. It was a great start for spring and a glance into what's to come at Spring Hookahville. Can't wait for that, with Willie Nelson there & and 2 nights of hookah you know it gonna be a party. My advise to anyone reading this is to be at Frontier Ranch on May 25th to the 27th. But if you do go remember "NO HASSLES OR BAD ATTITUDES". Come join the party maybe we can puff a bowl. So be kind & have safe trip where you travelers are headed this spring & summer.
Peace & Love,
John G. Youman
