The Scoop: Ithaca Mayor Declares May 8 Grateful Dead Day

The Associated Press
Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.

The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead concert.

Tickets for Dark Star Orchestra are on sale now. They are $24.50 in advance or $26.50 at the door. Go online at www.stateofithaca.com, by phone at 273-4497, or in person at The Ticket Center at Clinton House located at 116 North Cayuga St. in downtown Ithaca or at the Theatre on the day of the show to purchase a ticket.

The Mayors Proclamation is as follows:

Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca

Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable & familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, "there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert."

Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca, and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead Day in the City of Ithaca.

Right on! Every city should adopt this as GD Day. Then Dead Heads could take the day off work and celebrate! Maybe we could claim that it is our religious holiday. What do you think?

I bet the boys didn't get $24.50 in advance or $26.50 at the door for their legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead concert.

I love the idea, but it would've been nice if the Ithaca paper would've used a picture from 1977.

You're right. They didnt charge $24.50 in 1977. And a new Ford Mustang cost around 5k. A BMW 320i cost about 8k. A gallon of gas cost 65 cents. And the average yearly income was around 15k/year. A lot has changed since 1977. Bitching about a $24.50 entertainment ticket won't change that.

Fantastic. Just Fantastic. The Mayors here in the Twin Cities just bitch about who has the worse crime problem, who has the better, more culturally diverse, more blah blah blah city. Meanwhile the crime gets worse, the people get screwed, and the politicos just sit back and continue to politic. Props to a mayor who realizes that being in charge actually allows you to do some cool things, not just run for reelection.

thats badass. Im happy to see a political figure publicly appreciating great music, so much to make a spectacle about it.

back in the day,the first time the Grateful Dead played at City Island,in Harrisburg,Pa.6/22/83 The mayor declared it Grateful Dead day. Easy call back then when a Dead show in a small town meant the heads taking over. This is really amazing, when you think about it,that a politician officially acknowledging a rock concert from thirty years ago. It's not like it was Woodstock,Live Aid,or even a very big show.kinda weird

Hopefully this will catch on, because the dead deserve it. Also it would be a great way to connect old heads with young heads. Alot of the older fans dont go to the phil, Bob weir shows it seems, and the young fans (like me) are just getting into great tapes and trying all those things your parents tell you not to do. Some of my teachers are deadheads! It would be a great way to connect and celebrate. like 420 but we may all remember it.
