The Scoop: Ithaca Mayor Declares May 8 Grateful Dead Day

The Associated Press
Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.

The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead concert.

Tickets for Dark Star Orchestra are on sale now. They are $24.50 in advance or $26.50 at the door. Go online at www.stateofithaca.com, by phone at 273-4497, or in person at The Ticket Center at Clinton House located at 116 North Cayuga St. in downtown Ithaca or at the Theatre on the day of the show to purchase a ticket.

The Mayors Proclamation is as follows:

Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca

Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable & familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, "there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert."

Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca, and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead Day in the City of Ithaca.

Right on! Every city should adopt this as GD Day. Then Dead Heads could take the day off work and celebrate! Maybe we could claim that it is our religious holiday. What do you think?

You're right. They didnt charge $24.50 in 1977. And a new Ford Mustang cost around 5k. A BMW 320i cost about 8k. A gallon of gas cost 65 cents. And the average yearly income was around 15k/year. A lot has changed since 1977. Bitching about a $24.50 entertainment ticket won't change that.

Fantastic. Just Fantastic. The Mayors here in the Twin Cities just bitch about who has the worse crime problem, who has the better, more culturally diverse, more blah blah blah city. Meanwhile the crime gets worse, the people get screwed, and the politicos just sit back and continue to politic. Props to a mayor who realizes that being in charge actually allows you to do some cool things, not just run for reelection.

back in the day,the first time the Grateful Dead played at City Island,in Harrisburg,Pa.6/22/83 The mayor declared it Grateful Dead day. Easy call back then when a Dead show in a small town meant the heads taking over. This is really amazing, when you think about it,that a politician officially acknowledging a rock concert from thirty years ago. It's not like it was Woodstock,Live Aid,or even a very big show.kinda weird

Hopefully this will catch on, because the dead deserve it. Also it would be a great way to connect old heads with young heads. Alot of the older fans dont go to the phil, Bob weir shows it seems, and the young fans (like me) are just getting into great tapes and trying all those things your parents tell you not to do. Some of my teachers are deadheads! It would be a great way to connect and celebrate. like 420 but we may all remember it.

yeah that's right Grateful Dead Day in I-Town. DSO may tear the State Theatre down on May eighth. I am going to live on the commons until the grassroots fetival in July. Who follows college lacrosse? The Cornell Big Red lacrosse team won the national championship in '77. This year they are undefeated and number won in the nation. Mayor declaring grateful dead day, DSO, thirty years, undefeated, coincidence? Long live Grateful Dead Day, GO BIG RED!!

ithaca is heady, we all know this by now. But this really is a great announcement. What some here may not know is that Geneva, another lake town about an hour from ithaca in upstate declared Bobby Weir day last year when Ratdog came to town. Prior to the show, the Geneva High School Marching Band played a rousing 20 min rendition of Shakedown Street though the town. That was incredible! You don't ever hear about that because it's not headier than thou Ithaca....Nonetheless, it'll be a great day in I-Town.

Give me a break, DSO haters. Bobby, Billy, Donna and TC have all played with DSO. Rightguy, I guess your more "in the family" than them. And Jerry hates them? Hard to believe..."ain't no time to hate."

Remember, even the Dead was charging nearly $60 at the end of their run. Costs money to do shows and there's nothing wrong with the band making a little cake, too. Don't pay if you don't want to play. Ain't no crime there...

Y'know, DSO doesn't always hit the groove and some shows are left flat, but I sure wish more bands would do Dead covers. They ain't the Dead, but what are you gonna do? Keep the tunes alive and live.

And, boy oh boy, what show! Enjoy the music!

DSO charges 25, but so does every other band. it costs money to tour all over the world. also, keep in mind that they have no studio albums since they are a cover band so touring is how they support themselves.

its only 25 bones anyway.

Another reason why Ithaca is a great town. I live in Binghamton, about forty miles away, but always head up there for shows and really enjoy bands in the local scene, which Binghamton has none of. I wasn't planning on going to the DSO at the State but if they're recreating the Cornell '77 show, I'm interested now.

the whole spring tour from 77 kicks ass!

this is a great story...id rather pay tribute by playing the GD tapes than to involve some cover band but...so what? great story, anyway!

Two big trends on the scene that are paying alot of bills right now are Disney Land flavored cover bands and reunions like Greyboys or the Meters. if you ask me id say promoters would be better off to work with some of the reunions - if you think about it - players like George Porter or Carl Denson have worked verry hard FOREVER to make REAL music...artists like these deserve the love more than anyone!

why give these trickety-tricks all the cash?

Any one remember Milk and Group Effort? 2 great Dead etc. cover bands back in the late 80's in Ithaca. True, great town, I lived there / went to school at IC, but Santa Cruz is better, and though some amazing Jams occured in the 70's, overall, I find Jerry and Brent way more "on it" and in the pocket 87,88,89,90, check the tapes, more "peak" creschendo's and better harmonies. All the best, missin the boys, someone find Johan the Ithaca artist if you go to the show, he was the best "electric" face artist I've ever seen.

I often find it annoying when people degrade a band like DSO, because they re-create the GD's music. I have no problem with people that aren't into that, but, let's face it....SO WHAT IF THEY'RE A COVER BAND? People go to symphonies, operas, ect... to hear great music. (Remember, everyone that's played Mozart since his death is also a cover band/orchestra or whatever!) Music, probably since the beginning of music, has been re-created by other musicians, turning new people onto the music. The DSO are an amazing act! I can't wait to see them again. And also, remember, that bands like the GD got started, and even played some of their best music by paying tribute to other people's music. This is part of what music is all about.

It's great to think that Ithaca's mayor acted on her own here, but chances are that some crafty promotional wiz from DSO orchestrated this whole thing.

I've promoted shows, and I've looked for ways to stir interest, create a buzz and gain free publicity. There's nothing wrong with that. But I've also gotten three different mayors to declare three different days as official "XYZ Band Day" in their particular city.

It gets pre-event coverage, provides a cool 6:00 news photo op, and it, at times, warrants space on Jambase.

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other about DSO. Just thought I'd toss in my knowledge about the way these "Official Band Days" in cities work.

It's less likely that this is the work of a heady public servent, and more likely that it's the product of a slick publicity agent for the band.

RightGuy has taught us all a very valuable anatomy lesson today.

Apparently, the lining of the colon controls man's ability to think rationally, express thoughts sanely, and spell correctly. And when that lining is pierced by, say, the knife blade of a father and his ass-obsessed bowling buddies, all such control is lost.

anywho.....back to ithaca and DSO....Above and beyond the rubbish posted all ready, somebody said they thought this was a PR stunt. Also being in PR and being around Ithaca my entire life, I can tell you I disagree that DSO set this up. Now, if Ithaca as a city saw an opportunity to get some great PR, that's totally feasable and acceptable....of which, I believe, is the case. Pard my rudeness here, but Ithacans care about politics and even the most devout Ithaca deadhead would see this as transparent if it were, if fact, a band PR stunt. Cheers to Mayor Carol Petersen and her most likely personal fondness for GD. Go IThaca. Go DEad. Go DSO and Go Lost SAilors (carrying the dead torch in I-town for years now)

as i am normally one for liberally interpreting the rights of free speech, i shock myself in saying this, but is there any way at all to get therightguy banned? i mean, seriously, he has totally hijacked this thread and derailed it into a pseudo-drug-induced rant about god knows what.... i am as weird as anyone, maybe weirder, but honestly, no one should be able to commandeer a discussion like that... on a brighter note, i think that dso is awesome. and as far as jerry, or the dead, not being on board with the ticket prices and what not, go ahead and check out the festival express dvd... they talk about the fact that there were protesters not wanting to pay i think it was 10$ or 15$ or something on that order to see the dead, janis, the band, buddy guy, etc.... and the dead definitely did not feel all that much sympathy for them... they did play a free show, but only to calm things down... and frankly, what it all boils down to is, either go and enjoy, or stay away... no one has the gun to your head, no one is making you go or comment on it, so if it is not your thing, or you cannot respond intelligently, then don't say anything at all... better to remain silent and have people think you are stupid than open your mouth and remove all doubt...

I have to agree with the rightguy on a few things....DSO should not be playing on Grateful Dead Day...they have done nothing but upset heart and soul deadheads with their capitalisation of a beautiful thing... i never remember seeing any of them on tour.... Ratdog, Phil, Micky would be awesome.... DSO is the most over rated dead cover band ever...I have seen them live about 6 times and have yet been able to spin to them.... just something missing with their energy, aura, karma and vibe... nothing the rightguy says disturbs me... I feel his pain... I kinda sorta have a jest for who he is...he is family.... he has paid his dues when most groupies were not even born yet or were still in diapers... he means no harm... he has an opinion and he has the right to voice it... his opinions are to you as yours are to him...absurd!... itacha is the #1 suicide capital of the usa... alot of lost souls, alot of negative energy... a video screen drive in movie style showing of the actual grateful dead concert would have been better juju...but yo the rightguy...the sodomy thread isn't really needed... not everybody who is liberal is openminded...peace to you my brother...we shall all end our lives in death...may we all transgress towards our light afterwards

What the hell is a heart and soul deadhead? Isn't declaring a Grateful dead day capitalizing on something period? Speaking of capitalizing...the Grateful Dead were the top grossing act for years. Their merchandise sales continue to dwarf many existing bands today. I highly doubt that Jerry is rolling over in his grave over this. I would gather that he would be rather frightened by therightguy though. His decriptions of "the family" would even freak out the Manson family.

well palo they were on the bill at a few festys so i saw them twice on their own and was even worse....they did not even have their own sound system????? they are over rated is what i said...they are ok... but just that ok... not blow your mind wow i closed my eyes and felt each note...but who caRES...thats just my opinion... and ula yeah i agree therightguy writes some nasty stuff...but again who cares...he is venting...just words...not harming anybody... but what i meant about capitalising is that DSO really didnt start as a jug band and take decades to build a following, but rather just charge whatever because they can....is like somebody planted the tree, watered the plant and they just take the fruit...it is not forbidden fruit, but alot of people are still tilling the ground and planting seeds nuturing themselves into a time capsule of individuality, rather than copycat capitalists....nothing personal...just not my flavor of tea... it is supply and demand... i dont knock them for getting $100 a show if they could...but i would still say they were over rated musically...musically they are ok....not bad, not great....below my expectations....whereas Ratdog right now I feel is under rated...Ratdog has it going on right now. Yes Ratdog could be the band that brings back the love....i think what upsets therightman is that the love is gone...i think everyone shoudl give him a hug

I would just like to say that I love the Grateful Dead because of how the music connects with my SOUL, and since I wasn't lucky enough to ever see them live with Jerry, going to a DSO show is a great opportunity for me to experience some of my favorite songs in a LIVE setting...I mean, come on people, LIVE MUSIC IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE MUSIC no matter how you look at it. So yeah, they may not be the Dead, they may be charging $25, they may be "capitalists", etc. But to me, they are gift bearers delivering pure joy to my heart. Sure they aren't producing their own originals, but they do play from their hearts which is more important. (and don't forget that the Dead did A LOT of covers themselves).
So can we please stop hating? If your upset by something, then just go and chill to your favorite show and try to find something positive to think about!

That said, I would like to add that I will be in Ithaca for Grateful Dead Day and for the DSO show. I can't wait for it! but if they don't do the slide guitar of Row Jimmy, I'm going to be very disapointed. That is my favorite track of the whole show!!!!
What's your favorite?

Seriously though, could the AP come up with a picture with the 77 band members instead of the "Go to Heaven" photo shoot out-take the've inserted in the article? as far as them playing on "grateful dead day", why does it matter when they play? if it truly is the music that you are caring about, then you should not care what day it is. no one gets pissed at bands for playing shows on halloween or new years or 420 or 4th of july or any other type of celebration day... if you want to talk about commercial and not in the spirit of the dead, lets talk about the archive fiasco of years recent. does anyone remember that? and everyone liked to get holier than thou and "jerry wouldn't have done that" but guess what, the dead DID that... so to say that it is not in the spirit of the dead maybe shows that only the dead really know what is in their spirit... and as far as their music not being in the spirit of the dead, how do you know? are you an expert on all things dead-spirit related? several members of the band have played with them, so apparently the band thinks they have some of the spirit... and as far as not being able to dance, or they "just don't do it for me"... there are alot of bands that don't do it for me. i don't go to their shows, don't make an effort to go out of my way to diss them, or talk shit to people who do like them. i leave it alone, and the most i say when asked is "naw, i'm not really into that" or "i don't really dig them". i do not feel the need to get into a rage and throw a hissy-fit on the web. i happen to like dark star orchestra, i'm not saying there are not better dead-related bands out there, but i do like DSO, have seen them several times and always enjoy myself when i do. i am sorry that you do not like them for a weird and wide assortment of reasons, but leave it alone all ready... sheesh

just as you have the freedom to express your likes, others have their freedom to express their dislikes.... i think you missed the whole point of how DSO is just riding the coat tails of the Dead and do not deserve the high ticket prices, since they never built a following, but rather just absorbed deadheads... thats the major gripe of all the anti DSO people.... that, and they that they are way over rated

high ticket prices? how much do YOU pay to see shows? 25$ is not unreasonable for a number of reasons... and yet again... if they don't deserve it, don't go. simple as that. and if they absorbed a number of old deadheads, they must have done something right... i am not particularly defending the band, because you are right, you have big freedom to listen to what you want and like what you want... what annoys me more is people just bitching and bitching, without end, about something that is completely irrelevant to them. i can understand bitching about the government, taxes, etc., because you have little/no control over that sort of thing, just short of moving. but to continue to gripe, and bitch, and whine, when all you have to do is IGNORE IT? it makes no sense at all... and if you wanna go ahead and be the guy to hug the rightguy, you go right ahead with all that.

Being part of dead family, rainbow family, whatever, is nothing to brag about. So you're a burned out old hippie stuck in a time warp. And there are 50 other dead cover bands that can do just as good a job as dso, such as cosmic charlie. Right guy is giving all deadheads a bad name. He is also an idiot who can't spell and probably has less than a 5th grade education. you think you're some wise old sage? You don't know shit. You're just a stupid uneducated moron - a worthless bum who got exactly the karma he deserved. Probably has not seen any band since the dead finished, contributing to his bitterness and complete lack of musical knowledge. The dead has been dead for 12 years and some of these idiots still haven't found any new music to listen to. There is something really sad and pathetic about the "dead family."

Papabear.... you have the most made mistake on discussion boards...if you get so annoyed at what people write, then shouldn't you follow your own advice and not read it?... people who complain about people complaining make no sense.... you can choose to not post about others who post...but you do.... if it annoys you so much then why do you even read it?....and then to post about it annoying is being just as guilty as the person who annoyed you in the first place.... the best way to avoid message board drama is to ignore the negativity, or post your opinion..... yet posting that opinion that claims ignoring a band that you don't like while at the same time not being able to ignore a few posts on the message board is not logical.... i am not sure anybody is hating on DSO... i went to shows because I live in a boring bible belt area and DSO is better than nothing....try to keep an open mind.... but i said absorbed deadheads...not absorbed old deadheads... i dont think alot of old school heads appreciate DSO... sure there are a few , but come on ...out of the millions of fans they can pull from.... a few just doesn't cut it... i'm not mad, not jealous, not envious, not angry and really coudl care less if DSO gets $100 a show or $5... I was just stating that they are way over rated, and like Filo said... took no chances, paid no dues, have no originality and basically remind me of kind that has been vaporized then smoked... smells good, looks good, but the effect just isn't there.... however this is just my opinion.... i am hoping you reach the level of self content that nothing anybody posts will ever annoy you.... I know how easy it is to get sucked in by trolls, flamers and devil advocates... when you do they "win"...until the next dance...may the music be you my friend

Come on boys, did any of you catch DSO in their infancy? Old Martyr's shows in Chicago, in the late 90's where they got their start? If you had, you wouldn't be writing anything of the sort.."riding on coat tails."
I have been lucky enough to have caught a few Grateful Dead shows. I have listened to the Dead since I was 13. I was fortunate enough to catch DSO in their early years too, and I can definately say that they have built their following through long hours of playing and relentless touring. I think it is fair to say that they represent what a good show is all about. These are very talented musicians, who choose to display their talents; honoring a band they care very much for. Lets face it. Its not easy to pull of what they do. Not just any group of slap dicks can get up there and put together a likeness of my favorite band, night after night. Over a few hundred times(I think a little over 1500 now).
I go to shows for one reason, the music. There are a few bands that give me those ahhhhhhhhh moments and DSO are one of them, as well as the Grateful Dead. The unfortunate thing is, the Dead is DEAD. I will take it where I can get it. They improvise around time tested songs that bring Joy to my heart and reach my soul. Thats it, nothing more. If I got to shell out 25 bucks, so be it. A small price to pay to hear my favorite tunes reinacted. A small price to pay, for those Ahhhhhhhhh moments, nothing more nothing less. Peace my frinds Sean

DSO started as a weekly jam in chi, right? that makes sense - why wouldnt a bunch of cats hang around on wedensday evenings in a little local watering hole and jam on GD songs? but it didnt stop there - the scene grew around the weekly jams and before long there was a ($$$)demand for DSO as a product. this would have been a good time for these musicians to say 'hey, we dont want to be dressing, walking and talking like Bob Weir for the rest of our lives - we want to be our own men - we want to have our own band with our own haircuts'. The GD were pretty obscure untill '87. pouring what they make back into the band. thats how it is when you make your own band - you have to go around trying to get people to listen to your shit. against all odds. it is rather costly and a royal pain in the ass. it is sooooo mucth easier to do what DSO did than what the GD did.

how many shows does DSO play a year? they charge $25-30 per ticket - do the math - if this is not capitalisim what is?

as for 'orchestra' ideas people use to defend this kind of thing - fathom this - Frank Zappa resolved to use a computer to play his orchestral compositions in his later days because it was so impossable for him to work with orchestral musicians. why? they all belonged to a musicians union that was difficult to work with because they were so fucking heavilly paid from playing the classics that the game was locked - the $$$ was in playing the stuff little old ladies line up to pay big bucks to hear - certanly not contemporary works like his. so Frank tried and tried to have his works performed live by an orchestra to no avail - all of the money for these kinds of musicians was in playing popular classics written by dead composers to little old ladies. to someone like myself, who would rather hear new contemporary works by composers (from Zappa to Cobain) who are struggling to pay thier bills, the idea that we should take this direction with rock and roll is frightening!

why? Bruce Hampton - one of the more inspired people alive - has to come on this site and grovel when he is sick and needs to pay his hospital bills. yes, the man who brought us ARU, Jimmy, Oteil, Sipe ans sooo many fine muisical goodies over the years is left to grovel when we are paying big bucks to some tribute band who refuse to do any of the REAL WORK involved in making the scene at all...just usurp a popular bands song list and image and roll on through the years charging $25-30 to play how many gigs a year?

Another juicy bit - Jerry had Kimmock sit in with the dead once upon a time and was quoted as saying kimmock was his favorite guitaurist ever. it seems to me that jerry was sort of making a joke here - he was like ' this guy sits here next to me jacking all of my licks - he is trying to be me - he is my favorite - ha ha ha'. i bet if Jerry saw the DSO he would take them as a joke. doubt he would be mad at all - probably just laugh.

Hey I am not on one side or the other, but if you are talking ticket prices, they charge $25 in Ithaca, because everything is overpriced in I-town, seriously, check out the Tix prices for the rest of the tour, I'll bet you they are cheaper!!! ALSO people talk about seeing the surviving members like that is a big whoop, Phil does one off shows, with no rehearsals, and besides which where was he in the 80's was he even a member of the band, I think I heard his bass at a few shows, but not many!!I know that is a severe exaggeration, but you don't know how many times I saw that bored look on Phil's face when Jerry went into Warf Rat, but when his band plays it it is a big whoop, I guess I have issues.

Evil Funk....we pay big bucks to see a tribute band???? That is implying that your shelling out money to see music that gets you all upset! Hummmm? That makes alot of sense.

Seems to me that Jerry was making some sort of joke? Have you ever really listened to Kimock? If you had, you might understand that Garcia did heavily influence Kimock, and thats it. Kimock is a musical genius. Ill admit, here and there he does sound alot like Garcia, but take a listen to a good Hillbillies track, or maybe and Ice Cream factory....sounds like his own to me. Garcia loved whatever turned anyone on to the vibe...you suggest ego, I saw none in Garcia

Capitalism generally refers to an economic system in which the means of production are mostly privately owned and operated for profit, and in which investments, distribution, income, production and pricing of goods and services are determined through the operation of a market where all decisions regarding transfer of money, goods, and services are voluntary rather than commanded by government. It is usually considered to involve the right of individuals and groups of individuals acting as "legal persons" or corporations to trade capital goods, labor, land and money.

DSO is keeping the vibes alive so why is everyone complaining about the $25 tickets. I mean gas where I live is $3.02 a gal, that is what we should be complaining about. By the way May 15 do not fill up your gas tank. Last year over half of the people in the U.S. didn't fill up that day and the Oil companies were forced to lower gas prices. Please consider filling up the day before May 15 not the day of. Spread the word.Love for all the Deadheads nationwide

How can people bash DSO?.. they love the music as much as everyone else.. and they have the talent to recreate it.. maybe not exactly.. and maybe not as much energy... but they are doing what they love, and what they love is playing GD music.. if you don't like it don't go?..

john candy - you are right when you make a point about this being a volentary type of thing...i was trying to call it 'bad' capotalizum. just my opinion, no sweat, bro!

cavemandan - well put. (can you belive my cinical ass is about to engage in a group hug?)

deadshow dan - thanks for the music! id do anything to hear what people who were at 5-8-77 have to say about the DSO performance in a few days. the best would be two reviews - a thumbs up perspective - mabey a critical perspective, also.

before these message boards we were just sold what we were sold - now we can say what we think about what we are being sold - good or bad - this is quite a communication tool if we engage it...
