After moving to Seattle, I was very excited for this "festival". However, while the idea is great, the vendor booths are pretty cool, and the people are cool, the music is HORRIBLE!!!! I'm still struggling with how a city that was producing some very good music for many years now just has crap coming out of it. Are there any Seattle bands doing anything right now? Thank God for the touring acts that stop through on Tuesday and Wednesday nights or we would have absolutely NOTHING up here.

Aesop Rock is dope that I know for sure.

After reading other comments, I took a listen to those bands listed that have audio files on their websites. Unfortunately, I stand by my previous post. To each his own, I guess, but to me, they all sound like your typical MTV or Indie Radio band, except Aesop Rock, which wasn't too bad. Although, it does give me a better understanding as to why Seattle music fans tend to stand still during a show and only applaud when the songs are over.

I think the lineup is great, I would consider driving out from Montana for it. If you listen to KEXP at all (and you should), all these bands are in heavy rotation on the station. A lot of SSPU's popularity can be directed attributed to KEXP.

hell yeah, mattland! if you ask me, personal attacks like this have nothing to do with music in this kind of situation and say verry little, overall. I cant say i have never been guilty of this but i feel like i have learned that it wont help. theesae days i really try to focus my comment energy where i think it will do best.

sometimes its good when a festival bill has bands i dont know...im in it for the adventure! but, other times events like these - sponsored by local buisiness with adjendas of thier own seem to hire the boss's girlfriend, brother-in-law or developmentally disabled cousin (i have fit well in this slot...on a few occasions) to buy talent . typically (before comment boards) nobody ever really complains too loud because they dont want to piss off the boss' little darling or the boss. so it goes... we pretend we liked the music, right? music as a buisiness is often flawed in this and many ways. i always thought that the jamfest scene that came out of the northeast in the late '90s was a remedy to alot of this and many other flaws in the way showbiz works...blah blah blah...nobody wants to hear it...ill stop.

the idea that we have to toe every line provided by an advertiser or the media outlet like jambase - or we are negative - or our mom is a whore - is exactly the kind of bullshit that makes this buisiness...well...bullshit.

jambase would probably have an easier time selling advertising if we all shut up about things we dont like. still, they let us post whatever we want. that says alot!

i did not call his mom a whore. i called her a hooker. hookers will have sex for money. and thats not the point. i live near capital hill and believe that its good for the comunity no matter how good the bands are, its about havin a good time with music and friends.

Relevant - i live on capitol hill too. There actually is some great music going on in seattle, but it can be hard to find sometimes because of the media largely ignores it. It does suck that folks seem to just stand there during shows. People, keep in mind that this is largely an Indie Rock festival. Band of Horses & black angels played there last year, and the headliner was a Seattle classic Murder City Devils. Indie rock is not my favorite music, but it's a huge part of the culture of Capitol Hill & Seattle, as well as KEXP (who's a sponsor) and The Stranger magazine (another sponsor). It's actually a really cool gathering if you are into that kind of thing, and it's a pretty cheap ticket. Evilfunk - what are you talking about? Silversun pickups aren't dating any of the festival promoters - at least that i know of. But they do have a great following in Seattle.

Perhaps more info about Home Alive and the Vera Project would place focus where it is relevant. Fostering community involvement is a good thing. Shitty music or not.

....for those in the seattle area payin attention there is a great lil funk scene goin on almost every nite in town....somethin i have not found any where else....the seamonster on 45th is a prime example......if u keep ur ear to the beat u can find it almost anywhere.....

Relevant- lots of funk & jam rock here... altered states of funk, tap habit, flowmotion, in lake'ch... lots of stuff. Seamonsters is great... check FUNKGAZM2 w/ Altered States @ Chop Suey May 26... this thursday at Nectar is a great jam rock show... NEXT wednesday 5.02 @ Fenix downtown there is a great FREE show with members of Flowmotion, In Lake'ch & Danny Godinez... there's lots of stuff around town. OH and if you like Skerik check out his new soul/groove B3 group McTuff, they are sick!!! 5.20 @ Egans jam house in ballard...

Still lots of great shows around Seattle (although not as many anymore) - Seamonster, etc, that could be promoted by this site. However, most of the attendees at my neighborhood's Bloc Party are self-proclaimed hippie-hating hipsters, bolstered by the hippie-and-jam-band-bashing Stranger. I've walked by each year...so many hipsters wearing black looking unhappy listening to weak rock music.

What this site should be promoting:

CRACK SABBATH! 5/12 at the High Dive. Their last show was a return to form, which is PURE EVIL SKERIK.

I'm a musician that resides in Seattle and I can honestly say that this is one of the best places to live. There are lot's of great artists from here that are making great music. The problem is that the local media(primarily the Stranger) does little to represent and support it's music scene by only paying attention to select genres. It was much different when The Rocket was in circulation. As far as the Block Party is concerned, they have no reason to book jambands because there isn't much of a demand for those type of bands here. Seattle is a rock town(in case you haven't noticed)with a growing hiphop scene. In the pockets there is great jazz and experimental music happening.We are blessed to have people like Wayne Horvitz, Bill Frisell, Julian Priester, Dr. Michael White, Wally Shoup, Greg Keplinger, Michael Shrieve, KJ Sawka, Matt Cameron(Soundgarden,Pearl Jam), Jason McGerr(Death Cab), Joe Doria, Stuart Copeland, Bill Horist...fuck, too many to list.
By the way, the last time the Dead came through to Seattle, all their fans completely trashed the city with all their garbage and bullshit. It was horrible. And people wonder why Seattle doesn't like hippies.

Also, capitol hill is hipster central, so it's perfect for them... there are a fair amount of fans of the jam scene in seattle and the surrounding areas - hence touring bands packing out the showbox and neumos regularly. For some reason those people don't seem to know about the great local music that is here. The local press (including the stranger of course) is part of the problem, as well as kexp... they hype up some band playing at the comet that hasn't done squat, and ignore guys like Joe D who have played here for years and regularly throw it down. Fortunately you are right, we have some great and dedicated musicians here that bring the noise. One thing - Stewart Copeland the drummer lives here? I hadn't heard that...

And i wouldn't blame the Dead for Seattle's hatred of hippies- it's much more far-reaching. That is one reason I started the Jerry Garcia Celebration, to try to bring the non-hipster crowd out to enjoy some great live music.
