Spooner Oldham to join the Drive-By Truckers on The Dirt Underneath Tour

The Dirt Underneath Tour
(acoustic..stories and songs sitting down / tales facing up)

Y'ALL:

Everyone has seen The Godfather (I hope at least a time or two) and knows that a man can't turn down a request on the day of his daughter's wedding.

Spooner Oldham
With that said, last weekend I was in Memphis attending the wedding of my dear friend Roxanne Oldham. Her father is Spooner Oldham, who has played keyboards on some of my favorite records ever made. Spooner and my father have played together off and on for 40 years. His is that incredible Wurlitzer part that begins Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You)." He also played on "Do Right Woman" and has co-written some of the greatest songs ever recorded. He has additionally toured and made records with Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Last summer he toured with Crosby Stills Nash and Young. He also played keys on "When The Pin Hits the Shell" on our Decoration Day album.

We had decided some time back that we wanted him to record again with us this summer. With that in mind, last weekend we asked him to come out with us on THE DIRT UNDERNEATH TOUR. He'll be with us in Athens this weekend and then get in the bus and play for the next two weeks. That way we'll be all tightened up in June when we begin tracking the 8th DBT album.

Additionally, John Neff is all fired up and ready to do some double duty on guitar and pedal steel on our upcoming shows and the next album. He and Shonna will both be stepping up to the mic to help with harmonies and such.

Spirits are high all around, as the songs are continuing to come together and everyone is thrilled and excited to begin this next chapter of the continuing saga that is Drive-By Truckers.

See you soon at a venue near you.

Jason Isbell by Dave Vann
It's with a wide range of emotions and feelings that I'm announcing that we have parted ways with Jason [Isbell - guitar]. The split, which I consider extremely amicable, is the result of a period of personal and artistic growth from all sides which has left us with differing dreams and goals.

Jason joined our band, mid-tour, in the fall of 2001, shortly after the release of our 4th album (Southern Rock Opera). His impact on the band was immediate and profound, bringing an awe-inspiring combination of vocal range, guitar dexterity, and amazing songwriting and leading us into an era of creativity that has resulted in three albums that I will be proud of for as long as I live.

Life in a band is always a delicate balancing act of personal and musical chemistries. Having been in bands for most of my life, I still marvel that any band stays together for longer than a year. Especially if the band in question spends anywhere from 150-220 days a year on the road, as our band has done since 1998. That said, I have also likened this band to a family. A big, messy, sometimes dysfunctional one, but a family full of love all the same. It is in this spirit that I plan on Jason continuing to be a part of our lives wherever our roads and dreams take us in the immediate future.

Jason is about to embark on a tour (including a leg of dates with Son Volt) with his stellar band and will be releasing (finally) his amazing solo album Sirens of the Ditch on July 10 from New West Records. We all are wishing him nothing but the absolute best on every step that plays before him.

Cooley and I will have played together for 22 years this summer and DBT is about to begin its 12th year of existence on the very day that we will be going into the studio to begin recording our 8th album. Cooley recently sent me a demo of five new songs and yesterday I demoed nine new ones for consideration. In addition to Shonna and Brad (who is coming up on ten years in the band) John Neff will be playing with us full time, playing both guitar and pedal steel. John was a founding member of the band in '96 and has already played on four of our albums and has been on the road with us, full time for going on two years.

It is my sincere and adamant hope that everyone will support all of us, and by that I mean our band and Jason's, as we deal with this transition. Jason's tenure in this band has been one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me on a personal and musical level and our love for him and his music is in no way changed or endangered by our collective decision to move into different directions.

In addition to the upcoming THE DIRT UNDERNEATH tour and the recording of our next album, we will also be playing some special ROCK SHOW dates this summer and hope to do another leg or two of THE DIRT UNDERNEATH in the fall.

As always, the bond that we have with each other, as well as with the folks that come to our shows and listen to our records has always been one of the things that has set this band apart. We plan to continue on in that tradition and spirit and hope you will come with us as we attempt to tell another tale and Rock the nights away a little while longer.

Sincerely Yours,
Patterson Hood

Yes, I think he's still married to Shonna, however on his myspace page, he lists himself as single.
This really sucks.
Check out ninebullets.org for the Trucker faithful's input on it.

I don't get it. Why would you leave one of the best bands on the scene?

"I don't get it. Why would you leave one of the best bands on the scene?"

Perhaps, because your ex-wife plays bass in said band.

Sad news to be sure, but the Truckers have gone through changes before and were a better band because of it. Jason was the "new guy" not too long ago. Can't say the new band will be better just yet (talk to me after High Sierra), but I know they will still rock just as hard. Time to pick up some slack Cooley!

I agree with Fingerball, Truckers will still prevail, Cooley HAS to put the Jack Daniels Bottle down. Isbell has a new solo album that is finally seeing the light of day in July after 2 years in the can. That may have something to do with him leaving.
This STILL SUCKS!!!!!!!

shocking yes indeed. Truckers will always be Hood's and Cooley's baby. I Will miss seeing him up there with that monster his new tracks sound good< you can hear some on his myspace music site>, and they are label mates so I see this as a positive for everyone. And Im sure a twin bill will show up sometime in the future.

jason and shonna's divorce has finally gone thru. truth of the natter is isbell has been causing some major tension with some of his escapades on the road. with that said...i hate to see him go. wont be the same without him singing some of the best dbt songs ever penned. life goes on however and john neff is freakin' amazing for those who aren't all to familiar with him.

Where is the Trucker nation on this site?

Dude, just because you dont like SCI doesnt mean they arent a good band. Trucker nation is over on nine bullets. First off they are like 3 days behind on the news so most of trucker nation has posted there thoughts on the matter. I have seen SCI live several times, and all have been great shows. DBT is my favorite band hands down, but I check out lots of other music too. Like it or not this site is called Jambase, so a lot of jamband fans check it out and SCI is popular among the jam fans right now. That is why there are that many more posts. Ill see you over at Nine Bullets with the rest of us Truckers, and we will leave this site to the poor soles who dont have a site to express there feelings about there favorite bands.

I too think it sucks and have been reading more over on Nine Bullets as well. Just curious, what has Jason been doing on the road to stir it up? From what I've gathered, these guys are pretty heavy drinkers and still kick ass while wasted. I've never heard Jason screwing up on any live shows, so what is going on?

wjeremy is right. the majority of info is over on ninebullets.org. i'm just giving you info that i have from what i consider a very reliable source and some of the things i've seen with my own eyes. it has nothing to do with isbell's playing. it has to do with his encounters with other woman on the road....basically rubbing it in shonna's face. a breakup is not easy, but i can't imagine going thru it with your partner in the band.....spending 150-200 days on the road with each other night in and night out. isbell is not a happy camper right now, but he is a fucking helluva musician who will find his way on his own.

wjermery26,I have been seeing SCI since they were playing night clubs. I have seen them PLENTY. There ride was over a long time ago. Been there, done that. One of the many reasons why I got into the DBT.

I heard the same thing that johnnyroad heard. Had to be an awkward situation for everybody in the band if its true. I think Shonna and EZB are very under appreciated, and I look forward to hearing the new lineup. I also cant wait to see Jason live.

Maybe YOU were done with SCI years ago but they still kick ass, ask anyone who saw them in Colorado this month. I RETURNED to jamming to SCI after burning out on the typical southern rock drunk bands like DBT, just a way better vibe and positivity.

Look people. Its the music business. Shit happens. Stop dishing each other. The DBT ruled without Jason and will do again. I really enjoyed Jason in the band too but now its over= Get over it and just get out and enjoy the music. As for SCI I bet they will all be together again. People are alowed to do different things and that is what Billy has decided. I get so tired of reading peoples bullshit. I think some of you need to get a life other then worrying about a band breaking up.
Keep On Keeping On

Of course SCI will get back together. Honkytonk Homeslice will get old and Nershi will be back. They still suck though.
I like DBT, and a whole lot more great bands out there. SCI is a dime a dozen. They might jam, but so do so many other bands out there.

Love your Waits avator, did you see any of his shows last august. I got to see the Louisville Palace show.
I am over Jason out of the band, Can't wait to see Jason and the 400 unit this year. Surprised it didn't happen sooner.
Some people might get burnt out on the 30 minute improv jam that goes nowhere too, Strainger

Hey mhc10,

You cant say SCI sucks because they don't. That is where i was going with my posting. If they suck to you thats fine but stop putting a band down. If they suck then their shows wouldnt sell out would they. I saw them many times and it was great. I have never saw waits , i hope to soon if he tours.
Peace

They Suck!!!!!
When you have been seeing them since 96, and the chemistry isn't there anymore, they suck!!!!! There are lots of bands out there that sell out shows that SUCK!!!!!
If they don't suck, then why are they calling it quits.
Remember only 11 shows for die hard cheese fans, and nowhere near the midwest except for the Roo.
They are really thinking of the fans.
Waits is one of the greatest experiences in my life. Hope you get to see him.
Jason's been out on tour with Sun Volt this week.

Sounds a lot like "damned if you do, damned if you don't." If Jason does do anything with other women, he's rubbing Shonna's nose in it, if he doesn't he's just frustrating himself. No way to win living on a bus with your ex-wife.

"Shonna and EZB are a great rhythm section, Bar Fucking None."

I'm a big DBT fan, and love the EZB, but I wouldn't call him great by any means. He's one of the most unenergetic drummers I've seen. More of a metronome than a drummer.

When we saw Jason's band the other day I commented to my g/f that it was cool seeing some of the Trucker's songs with an energetic drummer.

. . . and Shonna's looking pretty good since she dropped a few lbs.

Love the songs, great subject matter, awesome energy. Truckers are a hell of a band. Comparing them to a band like String Cheese is absolutely ridiculous. I say that because they are so different. SCI is a "jam" band. If you think the Truckers are in that category, you must not have listened to them. The 2 bands have almost nothing in common. I like the carnival atmosphere of SCI sometimes, and other times I need the darkness and ear splitting guitars that the Truckers provide. I like them both depending on my head space. I like Slayer and Railroad Earth, but I don't expect they'll be planning a tour together!

Good point texas. If you wanna talk about cheese then go to their story. This is a Truckers story talk about the fucking Truckers then! Tell stories about the Truckers, like the first time I saw them I couldnt hear for two days after the show. Thats when I knew the Truckers were fucking great! Or the impromtu show at Tipitinas where only fifty people were there, two days before Hurricane Katrina came. It was one of tbe best shows I've ever seen!

I think that they only had one decision, to ask Jason to leave. I mean, he has a great career ahead of him, and even though I will miss him on guitar, you could take his songs out of the DBT collection and they are still a great band. I can't wait to hear Jason solo, and I can't wait to hear DBT with John Neff. I think that we have gained a great band, not lost one.

Isbell was a great part of the band, but they will go on as they always have and always will. Too bad he couldn't keep his stuff together but that's what happens on the road to some. For the record, DBT are the true dark and heavy heat and SCI are just cosmic noodlers TO ME.
