The String Cheese Incident Winter Carnival
03.22.07 - 03.24.07 :: The Fillmore :: Denver, CO

Bill Nershi :: 03.24
This was probably the last Winter Carnival at The Fillmore, and I've got say it's a bit sad. Say what you want about The String Cheese Incident, but they built a 15 year career on always delivering their trademark bouncy sound in a manner that made nearly every face in the crowd break into a huge grin. Whether your passion is bluegrass, funk, or rock, Cheese has something to offer. Sure, the last couple of years haven't offered the consistently stellar performances that were the norm between 2000 and 2003, but we have to remember that these are human beings like you and I, changing and evolving everyday.

Last fall, when Bill Nershi announced that he was moving on after the Summer of 2007, a noticeable ripple passed through the SCI community. I got phone calls from friends around the country and began checking in with the SCI website for the announcement of Winter Carnival dates.

When the Thursday show finally arrived, I was greeted by a familiar scene at the corner of Colfax and Clarkson - hundreds of fans milling about, muttering sweet nothings and holding fingers in the air. This may or may not be the end of era, but it was great to see the community pull together in support of their boys.

Kang & Travis :: 03.24
In traditional Winter Carnival fashion, SCI invited several special guests to join them. Thursday it was The Polyphonic Spree. While their trademark robes have changed to a more severe army costume, their psychedelic gospel sound remains intact. It was a shame that so many fans chose the Colfax shakedown outside over the revival going on inside. I suppose it's understandable, after all, the incident doesn't really begin till Cheese takes the stage and the ritual collaboration begins again.

The lights went down and the crowd went through the roof. What a welcome home! Any doubts about a great evening were immediately smashed as the bluegrass stomp of rare opener "Johnny Cash" filled the venue. It's great, old timey songs like "Johnny Cash" given the String Cheese treatment that many of us fell in love with in the first place.

Kang & Nershi :: 03.24
The highlight Thursday came at the beginning of the second set when Polyphonic's Tim DeLaughter and his horn section and chorus joined SCI to add some trippy gospel to the mix. There were some puzzled faces when the band broke into the smooth '70s sound of The Blues Image's "Ride Captain Ride," eventually showing recognition when the chorus rolled around. The lyrics sure were appropriate for the vibe SCI conjures up everywhere they go.

Ride, captain, ride upon your mystery ship
Be amazed at the friends you have here on your trip
Ride, captain, ride upon your mystery ship
On your way to a world that others might have missed

Keith Moseley :: 03.24
Nershi's vocals were a little rough at the beginning but everyone was warmed up by the time DeLaughter and his disciples took the reins for the chorus. The a capella breakdown at the end had the crowd singing so loudly they almost drowned out the band. I wondered why these two bands waited so long to share the stage.

I couldn't make the Friday show, so had to wait two days for another fix. It was a little bittersweet to walk in knowing this might be the last time Boulder's barefoot boys would rock this hall. The evening kicked off with a less-than-stellar set of old fashioned, single mic bluegrass from Chris Thile and The How to Grow a Band. While amazing musicians, their sound didn't fit the evening. To be fair, the audience was on edge, ready to explode, and anything besides an extra set from the headliners could only disappoint them.

At 8:15 the excitement in the venue was electric. Longtime friend, spiritual guide and bookkeeper for the band, Jack Mento, offered an extended introduction that incorporated many of the band's album and song titles. It was a tribute to all the incidents we've shared over the years and a fitting start to the last Fillmore Incident.

Michael Travis :: 03.24
I was surprised Nershi waited until halfway through the third night to break out "Smile." A letter home from the road, this song reminds us how hard it is to be in a band that spends as much time on the road as these boys have over the past 15 years, and perhaps offered some clues to Nershi's departure.

Maybe they had a good cry back stage or maybe they put the party hats on, but when they came back for set two they were ready to say goodbye to The Fillmore by blowing the roof off the place. And I swear they almost did it. Welcoming Chris Thile, Noam Pikelny, Gabe Witcher and Bryan Sutton up, the boys went back to their roots and picked out "Doin' My Time" and "Wheel Hoss" with a fervor that I hadn't seen all evening. Energy was simply coursing through the band.

Then came the moment that brought me back to Red Rocks in July of 2002 when Michael Travis waved a sequin gloved hand in the air before dropping into "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough." Keith Moseley let us know they were going to continue the tradition of "letting 'Trav do something strange." As soon as the red energy hats were passed out onstage, we were treated to a bluegrass version of the Devo classic "Whip It." Travis did not disappoint, and even added live whip cracks to the song. "Whip It" segued into "Orange Blossom Special" before reprising.

SCI & Guests :: 03.24
The crowd and band fed off each other in a ferocious and organic way. Every person in the room knew they were witnessing something special. Every flurry of notes or bass bomb was welcomed with deafening appreciation, which was quickly rewarded by more band energy. For most of the second set, the air above us was filled with glowsticks and balloons like it was New Year's Eve. At least a hundred brightly colored balloons bounced around the room for the last 40 minutes.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it was the music or the crowd on Saturday that gave me "the fever" again. I had it bad several years ago, and I am glad that the boys brought it back even if just for a moment. If they're gonna go, they might as well go out with a bang. If these shows at The Fillmore were any indication, they clearly intend to.

Too bad we didn't get to hear about the second night. Me and the four people I went with have a combined 150 cheese shows and we all agreed that 3/23/07 was a top 3 cheese show for sure. Absolutely EPIC!!!!! While we all have varying opinions on the other two nights for me it was a 9 on 3/22/07 a 10+ on 3/23/07 & a 8.5 on 3/24/07. If by chance I dont score tix to the final summer run I will take consolation that I saw this superb 3 night run with the family. I'm so glad this article is finally up, I've been waiting.

Dermatitis, you need to seriously BACK THE FUCK UP and stop posting comments about this band before you get bitch smacked. You claim they suck and that you don't like them, yet you're posting messages on their board and throwing out rumors that you have no idea about their factual nature. It's the same thing for people who claim they hate the Back Street Boys or Hanson, but claim they know all the juicy gossip and go on their message boards proclaiming how much they suck and you hate them. Deep down inside you must have some attachment to Cheese, otherwise you would have just ignored this review and read one about some other band. Grow up and spend your time doing something more positive than being a douche!!

Dermatitis: You are becoming a cliché on some of these boards trying to get a rise from the respective faithful.

Again here are some words from the band that you reportedly respect so much: "Don't shit where you eat, my friend." ~ WEEN

Do you like the jam scene or not? You come off as one negative dude.

the jam back into desert dawn after the drums is arguably the best jam of the three nights. Its real sick. The Jessica was very very good to encore on the first night. Pack it up was also pretty good.

If you want to rip on cheese fine go ahead but let me ask you this do you think anyone has ever read a post like "blah blah this band sucks or ur band sucks" and then some one goes holy crap what wa I thinking yea.. this band that I love and have seen countless times really does suck, its a good thing this person on jambase alerted me to this fact what have I been doing all this time......" I only made it to Thursday and Friday. Thursday was pretty cool Jessica was one of the best cover of the Night, but Friday was simply amazing. The Bumpin' Reel got the crow going nuts, and It was just packed with goodies like LittleHands,MissBrowns, Up The canyon! I think they are one of the greates jam band that ever steped into the genre. They belong on the list of the three best bands
1. Grateful Dead
2. Phish
3. The String Cheese Incident
Now I feel like there is only Umphrey's that can steped into the list. And whoever wants to put Disco B. in there has there ears full with wax and can't hear how shitty they are. Our scene is dying and the end is soon. Unless.. A PHISH REUNION IN 2010!

Great Story...but there is one thing you left out that sums up the night. At the beginning of the encore, Billy said "It feels like New Years Eve tonight" and that couldn't have been further from the truth. The Bluegrass second set was ridiculous. The new tune, Love is Like a Train is vintage Billy...how are they going to come out with new tunes right before the break-up?

It would be cool to get a review of the 2 nights following in Vail - those shows were insane. Some of the better Cheese I have seen in recent times. Spririts were so high that night and the band really threw down to wrap up the winter carnival. Anyone else catch those Vail shows? we drove all the way out from Wisco and skipped a week of class to catch that shit. Can't wait to see everyone this summer....getting tickets won't be fun though I'm sure....

i like the order of preference dawn. i'll think i'll list too. for me it was:

Friday
Saturday
Tuesday
Thursday
Monday

i'll add, the monday vail show was a slow first set, and a second set that went to shit (on account of too much partying at setbreak I think). the whole place was just sweating a crazy party energy that night and from what I saw riding the rail (first four nights), kyle had a uncommon breakdown and multiple times the jams were left in no-where land. tuesday was a great show, but the energy was a strange off-kilter because of the previous night. But the magic was definitely back that weekend.

and yes it made me extremely sad to watch billy give a big "what-the-hell-am-i-doing" sigh after each show, concluding with a final huge swig of gold patrone on tuesday. the man is insane.....

yo man, you clearly are not in it for the right reasons. this is why the band is splitting, because idiots jump on the stage (worcester 10/15/06)and it's lame don't know what it is really about. just go home, or go to a bar to get messed up man, dont take away from our experience.

nope..... objection noted, I dont know how I seem like someone who would jump on stage, but request denied I'll be at the beacon and red rocks hating and loving whatever I damn well please, does it eat you up inside... does it

Josh you're totally going to see all these people at Red Rocks and not know it's them! What if you turn around and borrow a lighter from someone and it turns out to be someone you yelled at on a String Cheese forum? And you'll never even know...

man most of the people that talk shit dont even have a reason to hate sci. To me it sounds like most of the hate is directed at the fans. Sure lots of people at the shows like to dress up, its part of all the fun. To lump everyone into a group saying we are all a bunch of hula hooping, fairy wing wearing, dread headed, glitter covered freaks is a prejudice statement. you dont even know anything about the people you are speaking about. Sure there are lots of people that dress up, I personally think it makes the event unique and fun. To say everyone is like that is lumping people into one group which is about the farthest thing you can say about cheese fans. We are a very diverse, kind, intellegent group.

Can't really think of a better reason to go see SCI. Sounds like a compliment.

I absolutely love Cheese, and guess what, I don't have dread-lochs, I can't hula-hoop for shit, I don't dress up or glitter myself. Why don't ya'll spend your time doing something positive and constructive rather than sitting at your computer posting comments? It's a big world out there, in case you haven't noticed. Great article, makes me regret that I wasn't there even more than I already did.

hey blower go blow somebody, I was defending the sci fans, whatever they choose to be. I am not a frat boy. I am a professional so I cant have my hair in dreadlocks or wear patchwork pants because i work for a living. Doesnt mean I dont love music just as much as anyone else. So why don't you go and find another comment that is trying to be positive and spin it a round to make it something negative. wow the hippie spirit is really with you. Oh and isn't you assumming that I am a rich, beer bellied, frat boy just as negative and prejudice as all the people hating on the sci fans on here? ya thought so.

hey ruff try some originality if you are just here to flame. it is one thing to read one of your inane hula hoop comments but fifteen identical ones. we understand the smallness of your brain is only surpassed by what lies between your legs, but at least spice up your mindless drivel a little for the reader's benefit. and who besides me thinks that ruff, queso, and mcall or whoever these guys with entirely too much time on their hands is the same idiot with several screen names.

Great story. Great Band. It's a shame that so many people have nothing better to do with their lives than to spend it writing such negative things about a band and a scene that has always prided itself on so kind and positive. The Cheese, and it's fans, are the last band out there that really carries the torch of the Grateful Dead. I have been getting increasingly disappointed by what is happening to the fans of Jambands. The unfortunate part of this great internet deal is the voice it gives to such a vocal minority. It really takes away from how special this whole thing is for so many people.

dude ajohnson, you're straight up retarded. Kang is an incredible mando/fiddle player, Nershi tears it up on the gitter, Travis is one of my largest percussive influences, he plays set and hand percussion at the same time, it's amazing (Hart, Kreutzman or Fishman have never impressed me the way he does). Hollingsworth is easily one of the best keyboardists out there right now, Hann adds a good spice to the mix, and although usually getting a bad rep, Moseley really brings it all together. This isn't even touching base on any of their songwriting skills. I'm real sick of seein' your stupid ass comments on SCI articles, if you don't dig 'em, fine! Keep it to yourself douchebag.

...sounds like every panic show I've ever been too. and they're the people talking shit about cheese crowds...

it makes me laugh.

also, cheese belongs with the dead and the trey anastasio show (cause really, thats all phish turned into. after '98,
that's all it really was, y'know? Trey showing off...but good for him, he can do it. But I digress.) The Incident brings the same dynamic and energy to their crowds that the Dead did, I think that, and I know that there are people who agree with me.

Let's all agree to disagree on whether Cheese's patchouli smelling hoolahooping dreadlocked glitterati are a better fanbase that Widespread Fratparty.

Listen seriously tyo all you guys who could clame the Sci sucks you have ovsily never exparinced the incident and probley should not beacuse you are hatters and we dont need you. They are hands down one of the greatests band of the new era and they have put on shows with covers that it takes more then balls to pull off. Pluse what gay band do you like that went on stage with MJ and played thriller. The last carnival was an out of this world exdpariance and to those who missed it i am sorry. But you should really try your hardist to make the summer tour, it is going to be amazing i promise. They have never let me down and i have pretty high expectaions. Also that artile mad me shake it summed up denver perfectly i could not have said it any better. To all those who where their rember to "Whip it"
