SXSW 2007: DAY 4 | 03.17.07 | AUSTIN, TX

It's that time of year again friends. Sleep deprivation, cans of beer, BBQ, and bands bands bands! That's right, we're here at Austin, TX's annual South by Southwest Music Festival and Conference. Every year in mid-March, Downtown Austin swells beyond capacity as hundreds of bands and just about every person in the Biz converge for a long weekend of madness.

While most festivals are punctuated by big name headliners, the beauty of SXSW is discovering new bands that your friends and co-workers back home have never heard of. While there are big name acts like The Stooges, Spoon, The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Interpol and interview panels with the likes of Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris and David Byrne, the real reason to head to Austin is to dig out the gems that are hiding on make-shift stages, dilapidated bars, and performing at liquor-lubricated daytime parties. Every year there are a few breakouts that receive a huge boost from their SXSW shows. Past years have seen buzz build behind The Decemberists, Bloc Party, and Dr. Dog. Who will this year's rising stars be?

WEDNESDAY :: 03/14/07

5:25 P.M.

The Black Angels :: 03.14.07 :: SXSW
Making the mad dash from the hotel to Emo's Annex for IODA's Opening Day Bash was the best move of the day. Austin's The Black Angels 5:30 p.m. set was the best music I would hear all day. With that first cold beer in hand and the Angel's distorted, swarming psychedlia wrapping around my head, I knew I had arrived. Their most striking feature is the Jim Morrison-on-steroids vocals, but the key to their sound is the subtle guitar shifts that are constantly moving under the sloshing, rhythmic sludge. When this band hits, THEY HIT! Not only was this set the best of the day, it's going to be tough to beat overall.

6:40 P.M.
The FADER Fort is the coolest venue in town. Every year the fine people from FADER Magazine up the ante, creating a unique area for their showcases. This year is truly over-the-top. With a huge stage, a little covered "fort" area with seats and benches, a DJ booth, and an indoor facility for bloggers and gawkers, these cats know how to throw a party. Unfortunately, the only band I caught was The Boggs. With an un-original, Brit-punk vibe, this three-piece did little to impress. However, the DJ was kicking out some seriously good shit. From Dead Prez and the Shaft soundtrack to The Mars Volta, every cut was a keeper.

10:00 P.M.

MiniPop :: 03.14.07 :: SXSW
If there's a downside to SXSW it's the increase in attendance. If you have a badge (which allows you access to all shows) you used to be able to stroll right up to whatever gig you wanted to check out and walk right in. Those days are gone. SXSW has outgrown Austin a bit, and when we wanted to see Beirut and The Early Years at Emo's the line was ridiculous so we moved on.

10:30 P.M.
Arriving at Antone's, the vibe was far more pleasant and the beers easier to grab. We stayed for a bit of Oakley Hall and The Rosebuds but the next band to really leave an impression would be found around the corner at The Parish II.

11:45 P.M.

Annuals :: 03.14.07 :: SXSW
Hailing from San Francisco, MiniPop packs a bigger rock sound than their name suggests. With a great drummer and captivating vocalist, this five-piece was a huge surprise. While not reinventing the wheel, they kick out a nice blend of power-pop. (Note to self - and all of you, too - go see MiniPop again).

12:45 P.M.
Taking a strong second place for Day 1 was the Annuals. A close-knit, dynamic rock band, these cats put on a great set. The focus is on enthusiastic frontman Adam Baker but this band has lots of layers. At times more than half the band would be wailing away on some sort of percussion, creating a huge rhythmic backbone for the guitars, keys and vocals to climb atop.

At this point it is time to remove myself for the computer and continue the search. Check back for updates, you won't want to miss tonight's Playboy Rocks Austin Party...

Hey, Honeycut was good and IODA party was off the hook with both Honeycut and Apostle of Hustle...one of my new favorites who seemed to be stalking me. Speaking of AoH, their Arts & Crafts label-mates The Dears also mezmerized me at Stubbs. Of course, Apollo Sunshine (my favorite in 2006) was on fire, The Stoogies (Iggy Pop) MUST be experienced to appreciate! Wish I had caught Sharon Jones & the Dapkings, but got to see Brett Dennen instead (who's gonna be HUGE in the next year). Peter, Bjorn and John was better than Kayce describes...kinda like Oasis meets the Beatles (if that's not too redundant). Pete Townshend, David Byrne, Emmylou Harris, Saul Williams, Slash playing Highway to Hell at a small private party, Donovan's stealth performance at the ASCAP party, Galactic with the MCs at the Spin party and finishing up with Papa Mali, Carolyn Wonderland and others at the Sunday gospel brunch. moe. did not play on Sat....they were running around catching the Buzzcocks and Presidents of the USA.

Yes, moe. played on Fri. in the Convention Center/Austin Music Hall "room". From what I heard, Tailspin was off the hook! They also played Bullet, The Pit, Plane Crash and others.

grtwent,

PB&J does have that feel of the Beatles cira the album "Beatles 65")before it was trimmed and renamed as "Beatles for Sale") mixed with a hint of Oasis from the era of "Be Here Now" (their ONLY DECENT album with was panned by the major US and UK media) but they're more like Burt Bacharach meets Belle and Sebastian.

I had a fantastic time at my first SXSW. I caught great sets by Elvis Perkins, Cold War Kids, The Cinematics, The Horrors, Pete and the Pirates, Mando Diao, Mew, The Fratellis, Kings of Leon, and The Stooges, as well as some I didn't really like or some that were just half assed (The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, Badly Drawn Boy). I saw Vietnam at the above mentioned midnight show by Kayce, but the sound was so bad it wasn't enjoyable. I'll just have to see them another time. Top three perfomances go to Cold War Kids, Kings of Leon, and The Stooges.

Heard that Outformation ripped it. My buddy said that it was by far the best band he saw at the Jambase showcase.

I had a good friend who made it to the Japanese night as well, and he said it was the best show he saw on friday.

I did the whole Ozomatli/Public Enemy show during the day which was pretty fun. Ozomatli always put on a fun energetic show, this being my 3rd in the past year. At one point they even were trying to get Leon Mobeley (Innocent Criminals) to join them on stage, and I am kind of pissed that it never happened.

Public Enemy was more than a treat. Chuck D and Flava Flav were all over the stage with a bunch of old hits (My favorite being Welcome to the Terrordome). The Highlight for me was Flava Flav yelling "F*ck You" to all the high ranking officials in the USA and England, while families enjoyed their free evening in the south Austin park.

Towards the end of the Public Enemy show we decided to take off, avoiding the thousands of people that were at the show on our walk back to downtown Austin. After a stop off at our car for a quick change of shoes, and a break, we headed to 6th Street to try and get into Emo's Main Lounge to see Aesop Rock and Galactic with Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born and Boots Riley. The cash line for this show was at least 100 deep, so we took a walk up 6th street to see if anything caught our ear. We knew that moe. was plaing at the Convention Center, so we decided to head that way to see if we could get in there.

We made it to the nearly empty Convention Center Ballroom to catch the last half of Pigeon John who was playing before moe. I was extremely surprised by Pigeon John. Him and his backup "Band" (Really nerdy white guy on the drums, and equally nerdy looking asian guy playing Keyboards, and dropping beats from his computer) put a really addictive blend of Hip-Hop, Funk and Rock that made me an instant fan. At the end of Pigeon John's set he just happened to bring up two of his labelmates Gift of Gab and Lyrics Born, the exact two MC's that I wanted to see with Galactic later that night. After listening to some great flows by the three rappers, I had a wide smile on my face. I even got a chance to meet Gift of Gab and Lyrics Born while I was smoking a cig before moe. took the stage.

Moe. came on strong with a very spot-on "Crab Eyes", jammed a good "Bullit" with several new songs sandwiched in between, and a fun "Plane Crash" to close the short one hour and fifteen minute set. I have not seen them since Bonnaroo 2004, so it was good to see them again. It was also good to hear the live interpretations of the material off of their new album "The Conch." Hopefully I can catch a full length moe. show sometime in the near future.

I could have walked away then a very happy man, but we still had a very fun exposition of sorts from the Polyphonic Spree. If you still have not seen this band at least once, you must make it a priority for your visual and audible music needs. Think of twenty of the happiest people on stage all playing different instruments or singing, and all dancing. If you are mad, go see a Polyphonic Spree Show. If you do not walk out with a smile on your face then let me know, because i have never met a soul who hasn't. Instead of the robes that they usually wear, they came out dressed in black combat outfits with hearts on their chest, red crosses and a new logo on their arms. It was nice to also hear some of the material from their new album "The Fragile Army."

We had a long drive to Houston after the show, so as soon as 2 am rolled around we had to get out of there. I had a really good day in Austin for SxSW. I am now educated on how the conference works, and will be much wiser when I am in Austin for the 2008 editon. Thank you to the City of Austin for holding such a grand event.
