DELTA NOVE: ONLY A LAD

Only a Lad was the debut full length album from the Cabaret - morphed - New Wave group Oingo Boingo in 1981. In the album's title track, the group's vocalist Danny Elfman creates a character that is born into a wealthy family and did whatever he wanted, with detrimental results.

Delta Nove
Fast forward to 2007, the promising world funk and soul group Delta Nove recreates "Only a Lad" on "Drink to Bones That Turn to Dust: A Toast to Oingo Boingo" using the "leader of the free world" with uncanny similarities to the character in the original composition.

Dep't of Records, a Seattle, WA based independent music label, had visions of a truly eclectic tribute album to the group Oingo Boingo that utilized innovative and emerging artists creating truly ground breaking music. In a recent, and very well received, letter to Boingo's founder, Danny Elfman, about the album, Dep't of Records stated, "We intentionally chose artists that did not sound like Oingo Boingo (nor each other) and found some great artists."

The most recent single off the album, "Only A Lad" has been gaining momentum, likely because of the current political climate. The song has been so well received that the label decided to produce a video to support the release. The "Only a Lad" video, produced and directed by Skot Gilbert and Leland Hirschman, has special guest appearances by a diverse cast, including members of the Supreme Court, former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and of course "Georgie" as the Lad.

This video can be viewed on YouTube, and more information about the album can be found at www.deptofrecords.com. The album can be purchased online from Amazon and can be downloaded from iTunes and other online retailers.

Delta Nove will begin a brief Arizona and Colorado run which includes dates with guests Blue Turtle Seduction, a String Cheese Incident post show in Denver as well as a date with JJ Grey & Mofro. For more information on Delta Nove go to www.deltanoveband.com.

Yeah! Fisrt comment son! I will take this oppurtunity to thank all the people that made this special occasion happen. Thank you Andy Gadiel, but your Andy Gadiel Phish page was better. Kayceman, though i have no idea who you are, I just see everyone commenting about you all the time on here. And most importantly, Buckethead, for bringing some good music to the dying hippy jamband scene.

I have to completely disagree with dms2420, I have seen Delta Nove numerous times and am never disappointed, each time I am very impressed. They bring the funk and make your body move till the music is inside you. Pysched they are playing at Dulcinea's this Thursday, they will surely fill the initmate bar with some seroius sound.

Danny Elfman later went on to direct the scores to nearly every one of Tim Burton's movies. Never really listened to Delta Nove before, but Oingo Boingo has always been pretty cool in my book.

I have seen Delta Nove a number of times and I think they are really good live. I saw Boingo 4-5 times back in the day and I'm really pleased that their music is being showcased again to many people whomay not have heard them before. Great video, too.

DN is a fun live band to see in moderation. But it's awsome to hear them paying homage to that little LA band Oingo Boingo. OB's been gone for 12 yrs but the music keeps on rocking. Keep it alive DN!!!!!! See ya Blue Cafe in Sunset.................

That video/song was pretty lame stab at being political.

I first saw D-Nove in 2003 and they knocked my socks off. This jam band is full of energy and knows how to put on an excellent show. They incorporate funk, samba, jazz, Afro-beat, and rock which makes for a completely unique sound.

Impressive band especially live as for dms2420 bands do have off days including the Dead. Give them another try and i think you might be impressed. For me any band that doubles as a percussion group must be talented musicans.

Granted, I may be a bit biased (I produced the Boingo Tribute Album on which this song appears), but I agree, this song (and video, ahem) kick ass. In fact, the whole album kicks ass. You should buy it. Your friends will like you more, and so will we. :-) Oh, and we're hoping to get DN to come visit us up here in the Pac-NW sometime, anytime, puh-leeeeze! Cheers!

Great job, guys! It's great to hear this Oingo cover and I like how the words have been updated to fit our current situation. A very creative effort and I can't wait for the next time I get to boogie with Delta Nove!

Lets not forget the most famous piece of music Danny Elfman will probably ever compose, "The Simpsons" theme. On another note, I saw these cats play Waka last year before the Biscuits, and I have to be completely honest I was not into them really. Maybe I'll give them another shot at Wakarusa this year.
