The Colour: Between Earth & Sky

Wyatt Hull, lead singer and lyricist for Los Angeles quartet The Colour, has an affected croon similar to the Arcade Fire, which makes sense because he's from Inman, Kansas??? Hey, whatever works.

In talking about their debut album, Between Earth & Sky(Rethink), it's tough to avoid the standard rock critic cliché of describing a new band by way of an older one but The Colour are bound to draw comparisons to a group they currently open for, namely the Cold War Kids, albeit with a more blue collar tinge.

The Colour is decidedly retro, sounding at different points like their heroes - a Stones guitar lick here, a Robert Plant wail there, drums from Sergeant Pepper-era Beatles bring up the rear. The sound may not be brand spankin' new but it does have some meat on its bones, thanks in large part to the live-in-the-studio recording produced by Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, Tom Waits).

It remains to be seen whether Between Earth & Sky will be known as a good debut from a great band or just a lucky shot in the dark from another California retro rock group. Right now, they've created a dozen enjoyable songs good enough to make you tap your foot but not commanding enough to be memorable without a number of successive spins.
