LAST WALTZ GETS DIRTY

The Last Waltz Ensemble
The Last Waltz Ensemble kicks off a nationwide spring tour at The State Theatre in Falls Church VA with special guests Capricorn Recording Legend Tommy Talton, founder of the band Cowboy and studio guitarist with Gregg Allman and Allman Brothers Band. Also guest starring the incomparable Efrem Towns from The Dirty Dozen Brass Band who has relocated to Falls Church after Hurricane Katrina. Also appearing is Greg Hester, the astounding vocalist of The Van Morrison Review. Doug Wanamaker from the Virginia based Indecision lends his considerable talents to this special event.

Opening the show is Charlottesville's answer to young country rock, Sons of Bill, who are fresh off a sell out performance at the Knitting Factory in NYC.

Kris Gloer didn't intend for The Last Waltz Ensemble to get so out of hand, and he readily admits it. The affable organizer and front man of The Last Waltz Ensemble laughs as he marvels at a year that has seen the band go from friendly jam session status to full-fledged national touring act.

"I thought we could have a great yearly event in Atlanta with The Last Waltz Ensemble. You know, get a few friends together during the holidays and do a yearly tribute to the music of The Band. Now it looks like there is a demand for this material and this show in other like-minded places. Four hundred people showed up at the Georgia Theatre in Athens a couple of months ago and our Smith's show in Atlanta drew three hundred. It's just amazing and surprising and so much fun."

Adding to the adventurous spirit of fun, The Last Waltz boasts an incredible regular line (Gloer and Mark Kramer share guitars and vocals, Eric Reed plays bass, Kevin Rutschman on drums, keyboardists Jason Fuller and Dan Seifert) as well as special guests. Slide master Benji Shanks of Captain Soularcat and pianist Tony G are two of the band's semi regular members.

I have always thought "Last Waltz" and "Stop Making Sense" are the top two concert movies ever. I personally like "Stop Making Sense" better, but that is probably because I like Talking Heads and their music, as a whole, better than the Band

IMO My Morning Jackets "Okonokos" is right up there with the best concert movies ever made. Check it out

All of you are missing the point. Its The Last Waltz Ensemble. Not The Band and not a DVD. These guys play the tunes from the DVD as well as covers by many other great bands. They are awesome and I am extremly lucky to have sat in with them in Atlanta and Oxford, MS. Go see em and I'll promise you will have one good ass time.

I'm surprised to see no mention of Gov't Mule's THE DEEPEST END dvd. In my opinion this is a fantastic live dvd. Almost every track features killer performances by a slew of special guests. On top of that the camera work is amazing and the editor knew when to focus on who, which in my opinion is the biggest weakness of most live dvd concerts, you can hear somebody else ripping it while the camera is focused on prob the most boring thing taking placew on stage. I think is something that Phish still hasn't gotten right. For example the IT dvd is so choppy, the camera doesn't stay on one member for longer then 6 seconds before it is somewhere else. I strongly urge all live music fans to check out the Mule dvd if you haven't yet.

How do you call it a "nationwide tour" when you never leave the southeast! i think you have to go above the mason dixon to call it a nationwide tour...

I know it isn't a concert DVD, but I found Rising Low to be great. Lots of great bassists discussing how they impact the music. Goes way over my head sometimes, but it's easy to forgive the artists for that when you can see how enthusiastic they are.

The greatest music documentary of all time is: "Chasing The Groove: A New Orleans Funkumentary." I should know, I just finished editing it and it premiered last week.
Check out Galactic, Papa Grows Funk and other great New Orleans' bands. Check it out at www.myspace/chasingthegroove or www.chasingthegroove.com.
I totally based it on Stop Making Sense, by the way.
"The Kids Are Alright" is excellent as well.

I'll have to check these guys out, if they ever make it to California. My vote is for "The Kids Are All Right."
