Antibalas Sets Extensive U.S. Tour Behind
Acclaimed Anti- Debut Security
Heralded By URB as "A Perfect Musical Statement"

Antibalas
In advance of its imminent Anti- debut and extensive eight week U.S. tour, Antibalas – the socially-diverse and politically-minded New York collective – is drawing rave reviews for the John (Tortoise, Stereolab, Tom Ze) McEntire-produced Security. In celebration of the album's March 6 release date, Antibalas' dozen-strong line-up revs up to entertain the people once again. Beginning with what promises to be an electric hometown show at Brooklyn's Warsaw on March 10, the band will then hit SXSW for a series of concerts, followed by record release galas at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and the Troubador in Los Angeles.

Antibalas' newest full-length gem, Security, pushes itself beyond the revolutionary Afrobeat blueprint the group used as a launching pad in the late '90s. The album is just the latest example of the group's penchant for taking risks and the critics have taken notice. "This funk is organic," Filter raves, calling Security "an all-time great pop record proved to have the wherewithal and talent to stand alone." Meanwhile, URB, in a glowing 4 1/2 star review, calls it "a treasure trove of eclectic beats, energetic sounds, political musings and agreeable voices that come together in a perfect musical statement." Moreover, Spin, in its upcoming issue, touts, "Antibalas' Afrobeat sound scatters into so many hyphenated juxtapositions that they've practically become their own genre."

One of the hardest-working bands on the planet, Antibalas – whose name means "bulletproof" in Spanish – weaves a rich tapestry of Latin, jazz, classical, funk, reggae and soul into its horn-driven performances. Known worldwide as veterans of festivals from Bonnaroo, Coachella and Bumbershoot to Glastonbury, Montreaux and Roskilde, the band has shared stage and studio with the likes of TV on the Radio, Baaba Maal, Gomez and Medeski, Martin and Wood. In keeping with their collaborative approach, two members of Antibalas – keyboardist Victor Axelrod and bassist Nick Movshon – will also be performing alongside recent Brit Award winner (Best Female Artist) Amy Winehouse when she appears March 12 on The Late Show With David Letterman.

Antibalas is the real deal. I have never seen a band rock an LA crowd as hard as they did in Spring of 2004. Easily one of my favorite live bands and will never miss them in Cali. Security sounds great thus far. We've been missing Antibalas on the Pacific.

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra

Returning to Starr hill for their fifth show, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchaestra, gains momentum in their righteous movement, picking up where Fela Kuti, the god-father of Afrobeat, left off. Fusing jazz, funk and traditional African rhythms with political activism, “their frequent Afrobeat parties get off on the good foot and stay there for hours,” the Village Voice exclaims. Their music urges you to interact and dance your butt off as the singer wails in response to the triumphant horn section. Everyone in the audience is guaranteed to leave the show drenched in sweat with a smile on their face, ready to take on the world.

Ticket Price: $16
Price at the Door: $18
Type of Show: Standing Show

Next to Femi Kuti nobody carries the torch of AfroBeat better then these find gentlemen from Brooklyn. Music with a message, propeling percussion, exultant brass pronunication. See them play live and then see them play live again. Then go out a buy every Fela album. I'm just one man but I'm proud and delighted to welcome them to San Francisco.

This tour schedule may be incomplete. As far as I know, there is a gig scheduled on April 8th in Chapel Hill, NC at the Cat's Cradle. So those of you looking for a local show might still be in luck. Cheers.

Antibalas is definitely worth seeing wherever you are. They are masters at connecting with the audience and making music that makes you dance like crazy.

Everyone: You have to check out this band that I saw in Knoxville a few nights ago. Their name is G-Roc. It is a guy who plays electronic drums and a keyboard player who lays down loops. They are freakin' awesome! I am personally going to tell everyone I know to check them out. Peace!
